In April 2016, a witness bearing delegation from Scotland visited the infamous 'jungle' camp in Calais. The delegation formed part of a sustained series of high profile visits which has enabled the situation in Calais to become a matter of public concern after years of obscurity. Those who formed part of the recent delegation included SNP MPs from the Justice and Home Affairs Select Committee, academics, clinicians, campaigners and those who have long experience in working with refugees in Scotland. Please join members of the delegation share some what they witnessed during their four days at the camps and also reflect on the potential impacts there of the recent EU referendum result . "At times of chronic humanitarian crisis, an active approach is that of bearing witness. Bearing witness is uncomfortable and provoking. There is a need for us not to flinch from the acute discomfort, even anger and helplessness, of being witnesses to what, wittingly or unwittingly, our policies and voting habits, foreign and domestic, have done" (Alison Phipps).

Bare Facts: Human Rights Bare Facts return to Cottiers after our sell out event in April, bringing you another stunning line up of musical talent and inspirational speakers. Human Rights are under the spotlight and Dr Cormac Mac Amhlaigh from Edinburgh University will give a frank talk on the contentious repeal of the Human Rights Act – the real story with no political spin. Our second speaker of the night is film director, Felipe Bustos Sierra, who will provide exclusive clips from his inspirational film Nae Pasaran – an untold story of Chilean solidarity. Scottish factory workers discover that their forgotten gesture of solidarity for Chile 40 years ago had incredible consequences. Winner of the Silver Mikeldi Award for Best Documentary at ZINEBI 2014, Spain Winner of the Best Documentary Award at Cortiamo 2014, Italy. With music from folk punk songstress, Chrissy Barnacle and award winning folk singer/songwriter, Karine Polwart, to stir your soul this is a night not to be missed. Doors open at 6.30pm. All proceeds from the event, after costs, will be donated to the following charities: Social Bite and the Scottish Action For Refugees. Speaker Bios Cormac Mac Amhlaigh is Lecturer in Public Law at the University of Edinburgh. He holds a Ph.d in law from the European University Institute in Florence (Italy), having previously studied law at Queen’s University Belfast (N. Ireland), The University of Zaragoza (Spain), and University College Dublin (Ireland). His research is primarily based in the field of constitutional law at both national and supranational levels, and includes research in the protection of human rights and constitutional reform at the UK and European levels and has published in these areas. He has also provided expert commentary in the media on matters of contemporary political and constitutional interest and has worked with and advised central and regional governments, government agencies and civil society groups on a variety of public law-related issues. Felipe Bustos Sierra a Chilean-Belgian filmmaker with Debasers Filums, a film production company in Edinburgh. Felipe has directed fiction and documentary short films, including "Three-Legged Horses" and "Nae Pasaran”, with the Scottish Documentary Institute. He was born in Brussels to an exiled Chilean journalist and those circumstances have heavily influenced his work. Felipe is currently in production of his first feature-length film, “Nae Pasaran”, which documents the humanitarian and political impact of the 1970s boycott of Chilean military engines by Scottish factory workers in protest against the brutal dictatorship of General Pinochet. The film is expected to be released in 2017. www.debasers.co.uk / www.naepasaran.com

#BeBrave Leith part of the #OurLand campaign highlighting the dereliction in cities

Join Andy Wightman and Our Land activists this Friday to show solidarity with the Our Land Campaign in Scotland. The event is on part of the failed Waterfront development. The land was acquired for over £3 million in 2008 and, following the financial crash, was sold to Sapphire Land Ltd., registered in the British Virgin Islands for £327,916 in 2012. The British Virgin Islands is designated a “secrecy jurisdiction” so no information is available about who controls the company. Offshore companies are often used to launder money and evade tax. This 'secrecy jurisdiction' is one of the five asks the Our Land campaign are asking for (find out more here http://www.ourland.scot/2015/08/asks/), and has been chosen to highlight how important this issue is in both urban and rural Scotland today. This campaign is depending on local activists to make the event a great success, so get stuck in, and help us show how much Scotland needs land reform.

The Harmonium Project a free outdoor event marking the opening of the 2015 Edinburgh International Festival and the 50th anniversary of the Edinburgh Festival Chorus

The Harmonium Project is a free outdoor event marking the opening of the 2015 Edinburgh International Festival and the 50th anniversary of the Edinburgh Festival Chorus. Created by 59 Productions, the event combines John Adams’s mesmerising choral work Harmonium with a series of spectacular animations, projected onto the outside of the Usher Hall. Working with the University of Edinburgh’s Centre for Design Informatics, the project examines the effects singing has on both the performer and the listener. 59 Productions combines technology and art to tell amazing stories. In recent years it has created the video design for the opening of the London 2012 Olympic Games, the Digital Revolution exhibition at the Barbican, London, and the Lighting of the Sydney Opera House sails for the Vivid Live festival. A recording of Harmonium forms the soundtrack to this spectacular event, performed by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and the Edinburgh Festival Chorus conducted by Peter Oundjian.

Europe is changing: the challenge for the radical left Syriza Scotland is hosting a panel discussion about the challenges ahead for the radical left in Europe

These are crucial times for the European radical left. SYRIZA's victory in Greece, the rise of the anti-austerity Spanish movement, the emergence of radical progressive forces across the continent show that another Europe is possible more than ever before. The Scottish left is part of the bigger family of the European left and is standing together with its comrades across the Channel.

Universal Basic Income - Join the Movement! Another installment from the year long series. UPDATE: livestream to be confirmed.

The fourth event in a Year long campaign, exploring Universal Basic Income in Glasgow This month we are Launching a Movement, It has become apparent during the course of these events that UBI has become seriously considered by Councils in Scotland for a Pilot to be tested in one or two of scotlands major cities so we are shifting temporarily from an open exploration of the concept with a variety of different speakers and performers, to a more educational focused string of events This month will be featuing Counciler Matt Kerr who is championing UBI as a Policy in Glasgow and Fife and open to engaging with the public to learn about the Main issues and concerns that you, the attendee's, raise during the workshops Ellie Harrison ( Artist behind " The Glasgow Effect" ) will be along to do a talk and get involved in the Q&A workshops The movement? We will be actively launching our own independent surge of energy towards getting Universal Basic Income more out there into the zietgiest as it already is, working closely with existing organisations and particularly with the artistic community in Glasgow as a force for change. Starting to expand into an online campaign, door to door / street canvassers and making the workshops mobile, bringing our resources to all different area's of Glasgow to collect information on what people are saying about basic income. Its all with a pinch of salt, and its nothing original but we want to dive into this as it is an exciting time for UBI and we all want to get involved. Come introduce yourself at the event!!! If you are an artist or a speaker who would be interested in performing or bringing something to the event, get in touch with Johnny cypher on facebook or here at Johnnycypherfuturology@gmail.com Thanks, more details as we confirm them!

Hope Over Fear are organizing this 2015 event to coincide with the anniversary of the referendum and to make a clear statement that our journey to full Independence for our nation continues. Our First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon has stated clearly that it will be the people of Scotland who will determine if and when there is an #indyref2. Lets fill Freedom Square and the surrounding streets of Glasgow on September 19th to make our voices heard. 2018 is an ideal year for #indyref2 as it is clear in terms of elections north and south of the border. HOPE OVER FEAR: SEIZE THE DAY RALLY George Square, Glasgow. Lots of great speakers including Mark McGowan, The Artist Taxi Driver plus great music...

The Hope Over Fear campaign will not shirk its responsibilities. On May 7th 2015 we have a unique opportunity in Scotland to wipe out the blue, yellow and red Tories in one fell swoop. We can electorally punish those who lined up with the billionaires and millionaires to lie, deceive and bully our nation into submission. We are not too small, too poor or too scared to move forward into a new and better world and by uniting the pro-Scotland and anti-Establishment vote in May 2015 we can realise our dreams. Bring the family and enjoy another great day out while listening to the speakers from all political backgrounds and on the importance of using your vote wisely at the general election. There will also be many amazingly talented artists and musicians for you to enjoy on the day. In the words of Gerry Cinnamon's inspiring anthem of our movement, "Hope Over Fear, Carpe Diem". BBC Bias Peaceful Protest #2 Around 1:30 - 3:30pm BBC Bias Peaceful Protest #2 - The People's Voice!

BBC Bias Peaceful Protest #2 - The People's Voice! Sunday, June 29 at 1:30pm - 3:30pm BBC Scotland Studios, Pacific Quay G51 1 Glasgow, United Kingdom This is a protest against bias from the self-proclaimed “impartial” BBC. The most important issue we need to highlight is the repeated omission of relevant facts, information & answers that has kept Scotland in the dark about the real independence debate. The BBC’s coverage is ruining the run up to the biggest decision in our history. People are suitably sickened by the BBC & other mainstream media and their one sided conveyor belt of scare stories portrayed against our economic prospects, EU membership and the currency of an independent Scotland. Sometimes the bias is not in what they do cover but what they don't cover in their news & current affairs programmes. Specific examples of bias that concerns us are as follows: Make up of Question Time panels. Irish & Luxembourg EU ministers views misrepresented. UKIP promotion during EU elections. University of the West of Scotland report on bias on evening news programmes (BBC & STV) University of the West of Scotland report on bias on Radio Scotland Good Morning Scotland show The BBC's membership of the CBI which opposes independence and even tried to become an official member of the no campaign until a U turn after a mass cancellation of membership by Scottish companies. Different styles of questioning for Yes/No including more frequent interruptions from interviewers. The list goes on… Let's keep up the pressure on the old BBC and arrange their next outing as a massive anti-bias operation! Bring your saltires, banners, balloons, friends, family and loud voices. Make it a day to remember! Everyone is welcome from both sides of the debate. Groups that wish to protest about other instances of BBC bias unrelated to the independence debate are also more than welcome to attend.
