Radical Tour of Edinburgh - Edinburgh Young Greens Edinburgh Young Greens host a Radical Tour of Edinburgh

Please note that this is a social and educational event organised by the Edinburgh Young Greens. This event is open to the public. What's so radical about the radical road? Which architect of the financial crisis had their windows smashed? What was the Carnival of Full Enjoyment and what did it have to do with Bob Geldof? Why did a British political leader have to leave a Canongait pub with a police escort? When was Edinburgh's golden age of rioting? All or none of these questions will be answered as political history buff and Vice Convenor of the Edinburgh Green Party, Peter McColl leads us on a radical tour of Edinburgh to escape the Fringe and uncover our chaotic and inspiring history. We'll finish up at the The People's Story Museum on the High St. and then for a drink. Bring friends! All welcome!

MURRAY ARMSTRONG at Word Power Books Thomas Muir's trajectory as radical, agitator and democratic hero....

Facebook Button Directs through To http://www.word-power.co.uk/ Admission free. Donations Welcome! "[It] draws on Muir scholarship and imagination to tell the compelling story of Muir's trajectory as radical, agitator and democratic hero.... It has been deeply researched and considered, and the author pays the reader the compliment of detailed and thoughtful footnotes and a helpful bibliography... " David Stenhouse, Scotland on Sunday 'The Liberty Tree' is a historical novel about the life and struggles of the Scottish Radical Thomas Muir (1765 – 1799). At the same time the author recreates events using the actual recorded words of the participants (eg. the famous exchanges between Braxfield and Gerrald during the latter's trial) and as such 'The Liberty Tree' also stands as a vivid, well-researched historical account of the life of Thomas Muir. MURRAY ARMSTRONG was born in Airdrie, Lanarkshire. He was a journalist who spent the final twenty-one years of his career at the Guardian which he joined in 1987 as a features sub-editor. He was Associate Editor at the time of his early retirement in 2008 which he took with the express intention of writing about Thomas Muir having nurtured an interest in the man and his times for many years.

Fanfare by Bike Brass Bands play along the Water of Leith

Gavin is getting on his bike and ,weather permitting, going to follow the Water of Leith from Balerno to Leith . Why? not just because its a great journey peppered with social and historical significance but..... "Fanfare is a city-wide event that harnesses the enormous forces of Scotland’s community of brass bands by working with the Scottish Brass Band Association to present a day of free performances for everyone to enjoy, inspired by the performances of En avant, marche! Throughout the day, audiences across the city will be able to share the joy and passion of the live brass band. Everyone will be listening to the same pieces of music at the same time in at least 12 different locations around the city. The first brass bands, many of which still exist today, were formed in Scotland in the early 1800s and are among the earliest forms of music ensemble in the country. Hundreds of bands grew up in both urban and rural areas as working people seized the opportunity to share their creativity and talent. The brass band was, and still is, an art form that is from, of, and for local communities. Fanfare aims to capture this spirit of community by inviting everyone in the city to experience the joy of brass band music together." Coverage will be broken is to Segments as I make progress down the river at the different event locations. Make it along if you can.

Butterfly Rammy: COORIE (a KILTR takeover) Is political community and shared feelings good for change or does it leave us in a bubble talking among ourselves?

Butterfly Rammy is a series of events held by Common Weal for this year's Edinburgh Fringe, looking at the political and cultural legacy of last year's Referendum debate, and how we can move forward. In the spirit of the theme of Coorie, this show is a special takeover. The cultural platform Kiltr will be curating all the guests and performers as well as addressing the issue of whether our new political communities can effect change. Many different artists, musicians, activists and organisations have been invited to take part, including KILTR. Our KILTR takeover will be on Friday 21st August at 12.20, and we'll be live-streaming our panel from here so you can enjoy the proceedings from wherever you might happen to be. We'll be discussing issues around the Referendum and how New Media in Scotland came to the fore in what was a political awakening for all in Scotland and joining us will be KILTR CEO Brian Hughes, political performance artist Chunky Mark the Artist Taxi Driver, Scottish rapper and blogger Darren McGarvey (aka Loki), and Victoria Heaney from the Radical Independence Campaign. Political Martyrs Monument with Murray Armstrong Gavin meets with Murray Armstrong to learn about Thomas Muir of Huntershill

To mark the 250th Anniversary the Father of Scottish Democracy Thomas Muir, Gavin will be meeting Journalist and Author Murray Armstrong to discuss his book The Liberty Tree, about the Scottish political reformer at the Martyrs' Monument : It was built in 1844 by architect Thomas Hamilton (1784 - 1858) to commemorate the five political martyrs of 1793, who were charged with sedition and transported to Australia for demanding legal and parliamentary reform. The monument is 27.4m (90 feet) in height and speaks for itself: It includes the following quotations: "I have devoted myself to the cause of The People. It is a good cause - it shall ultimately prevail - it shall finally triumph." Speech of Thomas Muir in the Court of Judiciary on the 30th August 1793. "I know that what has been done these two days will be Re-Judged." Speech of William Skirving in the Court of Judiciary on the 7th January, 1794.

NORDIC HOUSE with Lesley Riddoch Lesley Riddoch & Icelandic consul Kristin Hannesdottir

The Scottish Storytelling Centre will become a Nordic House during this year’s Edinburgh Festival with a multi-media exhibition of landscape art from all five of the Nordic nations. One of the most heavily visited parts of Edinburgh will become a visible symbol of Nordic/Scottish cooperation with all national flags flying together over the Royal Mile. The Scottish collaborating partners are the Scottish Storytelling Centre, architect, Lateral North Director and Nordic House curator Graham Hogg and Lesley Riddoch, broadcaster and Director of Nordic Horizons a policy group which brings Nordic specialists to speak in the Scottish Parliament. A Nordic Culture Fund grant allows the showcase of reproduced paintings, photography, apposite music and a makeshift Nordic hut to depict a small number of the landscapes to be found across Scandinavia including: Women at Sea – women and families involved in fishing & farming on the Finnish Åland islands before WW2. Kaare Espolin Johnson – Norwegian painter and graphic artist who produced striking images of people & seascapes, despite being almost blind. Johannes Sveinsson Kjarval – an orphan and fisherman who became Iceland’s most prolific painter using a variety of styles to depict landscape and lava formation. Vennelyst – photos comparing the 1900s with today in Copenhagen’s oldest allotment garden where families traditionally moved to live for the summer. Sweden – photographs of Kiruna town, currently being moved to make way for iron mining operations. The collaboration aims to question the myth of an empty frozen North & explore contrasts and continuities with Scottish art & landscape. The Nordic House opens on Wednesday 29 July and closes on September 5 September with an afternoon of films about the two painters and talks from Espolin Johnson’s son Gisle and the Icelandic Consul Kristin Hannesdottir. There will also be a children’s trail with Nordic soft toys and a find-the-animal quiz. The Storytelling Centre is located on Edinburgh’s second busiest pedestrian thoroughfare and has six shows daily during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and an estimated 11,000 visitors daily in peak summer months. The building is part of the John Knox House (Edinburgh’s oldest) and contains a bookshop, exhibition and Café.

Facebook Button Directs through To http://www.word-power.co.uk/ A Manifesto for Independent Working Class Education is a new book from the IWCE. It asks what we can learn from the historic struggles of workers who demanded an education that suited their needs and to win the class struggle. It discusses the implications for today, including the breadth of those who are exploited by capitalism and a global scale. This new book by the IWCE Network both gives an historic account of those struggles but also sparks a debate about the way forward. Q&A session with MARK THOMAS at Word Power Books discusses 100 Acts of Minor Dissent

Event will be live only. Comedian Mark Thomas has been campaigning for over nearly three decades. He has remained uniquely relevant and agitated where others have mellowed and capitulated. One Hundred Acts of Minor Dissent is the brilliantly funny account of a year spent living provocatively. From successful campaigns against multinationals to protests against local park planners, from arts and crafts with porn mags to raising cinema workers wages, this is a wonderfully funny adventure. Rich with photos and graphics One Hundred Acts is also dangerously inspirational… MARK THOMAS describes himself variously as a confused liberal, activist anarchist, asthmatic rambler and fat Dad. He has previously published four books, including The People's Manifesto and As Used on the Famous Nelson Mandela. As well as winning many awards for his comedy performances, he has made six series of The Mark Thomas Comedy Product, multiple documentaries for Dispatches on Channel 4 and has performed at The National Theatre. In performing One Hundred Acts of Minor Dissent he campaigned successfully for trade union recognition for cinema workers, got a multinational to change their practices, brought 4 court cases and annoyed lots of people. He lives in South London with his family.

Gone Native (Kevin Gore & Bobby Nicholson) Edinburgh-based singer songwriters bring their Edinburgh Fringe show "Gone Native" to the Yes Cafe

Two of Edinburgh’s finest resident songwriters perform a showcase of original and traditional Celtic music. Songs of love, travelling, pandas and trams. Nicholson and Gore have performed to audiences in Europe, Australia and the USA. ‘Rock-solid quality song writing’ (Leith Festival). ‘The same world Robert Burns so divisively captured in the minds of common folk’ (Volition Scotland). ‘Nicholson gives his songs inside a witty and often hilarious delivery – but each song makes a political and/or poignant point’ (Lost Horizons Music, London). ‘Gore is knock-out, his songs balance beauty with fierce rallying cries for social justice’ (Fest).

An Edinburgh Fringe event: Inspirational Talk with Questions and Answers with Lindsay Jarrett - the Independence Climber who, during the Independence Referendum Campaign famously climbed up the Edinburgh Castle Rock in the middle of the night and placed a huge Yes sign high up on the rock face for the world to see - an unbelievable feat in itself but all the more remarkable when you think that Lindsay managed this despite her battle with Alpha-1, a rare condition which means she is only able to use 20% of her lung capacity and with her life saving oxygen tank strapped to her back. Remarkable, inspirational and humbling. Please come along on the evening to hear Lindsay's inspirational story not only about this amazing feat but about what drives her in life with her wonderful family and now in politics - and how she will continue to fight all the way to make Scotland a better, fairer and more caring country. Lindsay will also hold a Questions & Answers session so please do not miss this great opportunity to meet and to get to know Lindsay, to show our continued support and express our thanks to one of our true Scottish Independence heroes.

The Harmonium Project a free outdoor event marking the opening of the 2015 Edinburgh International Festival and the 50th anniversary of the Edinburgh Festival Chorus

The Harmonium Project is a free outdoor event marking the opening of the 2015 Edinburgh International Festival and the 50th anniversary of the Edinburgh Festival Chorus. Created by 59 Productions, the event combines John Adams’s mesmerising choral work Harmonium with a series of spectacular animations, projected onto the outside of the Usher Hall. Working with the University of Edinburgh’s Centre for Design Informatics, the project examines the effects singing has on both the performer and the listener. 59 Productions combines technology and art to tell amazing stories. In recent years it has created the video design for the opening of the London 2012 Olympic Games, the Digital Revolution exhibition at the Barbican, London, and the Lighting of the Sydney Opera House sails for the Vivid Live festival. A recording of Harmonium forms the soundtrack to this spectacular event, performed by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and the Edinburgh Festival Chorus conducted by Peter Oundjian.

Max Blumenthal: The 51 Day War book launch with Glasgow SPSC Max Blumenthal: The 51 Day War book launch with Glasgow SPSC. Max will be showing a 5 min film then talking for 45 mins.

Beginning July 8, 2014, Israel launched air strikes and a ground invasion of Gaza that lasted fifty-one days, leaving over 2,000 people dead, the vast majority of whom were civilians. During the assault, at least 10,000 homes were destroyed and, according to the United Nations, nearly 300,000 Palestinians were displaced. Max Blumenthal was on the ground during what he argues was an entirely avoidable catastrophe. In this explosive work of reportage, Blumenthal reveals the harrowing conditions and cynical deceptions that led to the ruinous war. Here, for the first time, Blumenthal unearths and presents shocking evidence of atrocities he gathered in the rubble of Gaza. Blumenthal’s on-the-ground reportage uncovers and analyses details overlooked by mainstream media outlets—including regional political motives, war crimes, and US involvement in the eventual ceasefire agreement—an outcome showing that US & Egyptian-led diplomacy makes another war almost inevitable. ‘The 51 Day War’ presents unflinching accounts of: the use of civilians as human shields by Israeli forces; the arbitrary targeting of Palestinian civilians; and widespread incitement to genocide by Israeli military personnel, political leaders, and state-sponsored clerics. Eyewitness accounts from Gazan residents document potential war crimes committed by the Israeli armed forces. Blumenthal also details the battles that took place between Israeli forces and the armed guerrilla factions of the Gaza Strip, explaining their military and political significance with intimate proximity to the subject. Max Blumenthal is an award-winning journalist and best-selling author whose articles and video documentaries have appeared in New York Times, Daily Beast, Guardian, Huffington Post, Salon, Al Jazeera English and many other publications. He is the author of Goliath: Life and Loathing in Greater Israel and Republican Gomorrah: Inside The Movement That Shattered the Party.

Hope Over Fear are organizing this 2015 event to coincide with the anniversary of the referendum and to make a clear statement that our journey to full Independence for our nation continues. Lets fill Freedom Square and the surrounding streets of Glasgow on September 19th to make our voices heard. 2018 is an ideal year for #indyref2 as it is clear in terms of elections north and south of the border. HOPE OVER FEAR: SEIZE THE DAY RALLY George Square, Glasgow. Lots of great speakers including Mark McGowan, The Artist Taxi Driver plus great music...

The Hope Over Fear campaign will not shirk its responsibilities. On May 7th 2015 we have a unique opportunity in Scotland to wipe out the blue, yellow and red Tories in one fell swoop. We can electorally punish those who lined up with the billionaires and millionaires to lie, deceive and bully our nation into submission. We are not too small, too poor or too scared to move forward into a new and better world and by uniting the pro-Scotland and anti-Establishment vote in May 2015 we can realise our dreams. Bring the family and enjoy another great day out while listening to the speakers from all political backgrounds and on the importance of using your vote wisely at the general election. There will also be many amazingly talented artists and musicians for you to enjoy on the day. In the words of Gerry Cinnamon's inspiring anthem of our movement, "Hope Over Fear, Carpe Diem". BBC Bias Peaceful Protest #2 Around 1:30 - 3:30pm BBC Bias Peaceful Protest #2 - The People's Voice!

BBC Bias Peaceful Protest #2 - The People's Voice! Sunday, June 29 at 1:30pm - 3:30pm BBC Scotland Studios, Pacific Quay G51 1 Glasgow, United Kingdom This is a protest against bias from the self-proclaimed “impartial” BBC. The most important issue we need to highlight is the repeated omission of relevant facts, information & answers that has kept Scotland in the dark about the real independence debate. The BBC’s coverage is ruining the run up to the biggest decision in our history. People are suitably sickened by the BBC & other mainstream media and their one sided conveyor belt of scare stories portrayed against our economic prospects, EU membership and the currency of an independent Scotland. Sometimes the bias is not in what they do cover but what they don't cover in their news & current affairs programmes. Specific examples of bias that concerns us are as follows: Make up of Question Time panels. Irish & Luxembourg EU ministers views misrepresented. UKIP promotion during EU elections. University of the West of Scotland report on bias on evening news programmes (BBC & STV) University of the West of Scotland report on bias on Radio Scotland Good Morning Scotland show The BBC's membership of the CBI which opposes independence and even tried to become an official member of the no campaign until a U turn after a mass cancellation of membership by Scottish companies. Different styles of questioning for Yes/No including more frequent interruptions from interviewers. The list goes on… Let's keep up the pressure on the old BBC and arrange their next outing as a massive anti-bias operation! Bring your saltires, banners, balloons, friends, family and loud voices. Make it a day to remember! Everyone is welcome from both sides of the debate. Groups that wish to protest about other instances of BBC bias unrelated to the independence debate are also more than welcome to attend.
