Positive Money: Rethinking Our Conceptions of Banking and Money Robert Pallot from Positve Money, will be dispelling popular misconceptions of banks, including the textbook model used by many economists

We're delighted to be hosting Robert Pallot from Positve Money who will be dispelling popular misconceptions of banks, including the textbook model used by many economists and policymakers, and present a more accurate view of banks and money creation. Rob is a recent graduate of Edinburgh University who studied economics with the hope of understanding what caused the financial crisis. Keen to help spread the pluralist word, he also gives tours of Mayfair's hedge funds, with London's Occupy Tours. Join us for what promises to be a very exciting lecture, which will explain: How banks can lend money they do not already have; Why there is no limit to the amount of money banks may choose to create; And the implications for the wider economy. Positive Money is an organisation that campaigns and researches for a money and banking system that works for society and not against it. You can read more here http://positivemoney.org/about/ The lecture is free and open to all!

Unite - Edinburgh Council Jobs Crisis Unite calls for collaboration to avert Edinburgh council jobs crisis

Unite calls for collaboration to avert Edinburgh council jobs crisis 20 October 2015 Unite members employed by the City of Edinburgh council (CEC) have called on council leaders and elected representatives to work with them in exploring alternative budget proposals to offset the need for a potential 2,000 job losses by March 2016. Representatives of the council’s joint trade union committee were told by CEC’s negotiating body, which includes chief executive Andrew Kerr, a no compulsory redundancy clause could be lifted as the council seeks to make £141 million worth of savings over the next three years. Unite will put forward a number of alternative financing proposals to the negotiation body and councillors ahead of a meeting of the CEC Finance & Resource Committee on 29 October, including a call for political help to secure an amnesty on the Council’s repayment of pre-Scotland Act debts owed to the Public Works Loans Board (PWLB) - which could release up to £96 million into the council budget over a three year period. Unite deputy Scottish secretary Mary Alexander said: “We are fast-approaching a critical juncture for the future of public sector services and employment across the CEC. “What we are calling for is a genuinely collaborative effort to help ensure we still have sustainable services and jobs under public ownership, while avoiding the need for compulsory redundancies. “We will be submitting a number of alternative proposals for the consideration of council officials and councillors, including the pursuit of an amnesty on the repayment of historical loans from the PWLB which date back to the early 1990s. “There is no panacea to the long and difficult road ahead of us but it shouldn’t be beyond our capabilities to consider more sustainable models of budget delivery and service provision.” ENDS For further information please contact Unite deputy Scottish secretary Mary Alexander on 07711 237075 or Peter Welsh, Unite Scotland Communications, on 07810 157931. Unite is Britain and Ireland’s largest trade union with over 1.4 million members working across all sectors of the economy. The general secretary is Len McCluskey. - See more at: http://www.unitetheunion.org/news/unite-calls-for-collaboration-to-avert-edinburgh-council-jobs-crisis/#sthash.kv4yCG2i.dpuf

PROTEST TO OPPOSE HOSPTIAL BEING NAMED AFTER MONARCH live from the new Southern General hospital

The Scottish Government have buried their heads in the sand and are hoping this goes away. Their replies to my email have been nothing short of disgraceful. The more journalists dig into this story, the more questions are raised about the whole saga. In light of this, we have decided to organise a protest on the 23rd of October at 14:30 at the Govan Road entrance to the new hospital. We hope that you can come along to show solidarity with those of us who feel it is unacceptable to name a taxpayer funded public hospital after a monarch, the beacon of inequality. Bring banners (tasteful ones please). For event details. Search PROTEST AT NEW SOUTHERN GENERAL HOSPITAL in Facebook and the page will appear.

The Bare Facts October event will see land reform author and campaigner, Andy Wightman and photographer and filmmaker Chris Leslie discuss the implications of land reform in Scotland. An evening of music and political debate; hosted by the fabulous Viv Gee. Scotland has the most concentrated land ownership in the developed world. Half of Scotland’s private land is owned by just 432 owners. Yet, land reform is not simply a rural issue. Over 26,000 acres of urban Scotland lies derelict. And over 750,000 acres is registered in overseas tax havens. Houses are increasingly unaffordable for young people. Land reform concerns us all. With music from Scots Singer of the Year, Siobhan Miller and the eclectic fun loving, League of Highland Gentlemen, this is a night not to be missed! Door open at 6.30pm. Tickets £5 (+booking fee) at CCA Box Office. Kicking our consumer habit with Dr Iain Black Deconsumerism: Let's stop consumerism consuming us!

Me-first economics has created a cycle of work-to-consume. Saturation advertising and marketing continuously pushes us to spend money. But since me-first economics has also created long-term stagnation in wages, it has required us to borrow more and more to fuel consumption (personal debt in Britain is back to record levels). We are then trapped by our debt into maximising income in a low-pay economy........Let's try something different?

RAZEM: From Scotland to Poland, our struggle’s the same Speakers from RAZEM and RISE - Scotland's Left Alliance discuss why RAZEM, a recently formed left wing force standing in the forthcoming Polish elections on 25 October, has a crucial role to play in these elections.

Partia RAZEM was formed earlier as a left wing force to stand in the parliamentary elections in Poland. In September they collected with an outstanding speed the signatures of well over 100,000 people in 22 regions and are standing in the election on the 25th of October. RAZEM stand on an anti-austerity platform and campaign for a fully public and free National Health service and for free education, challenging privatization of either. They seek to repeal anti-Trade Union laws and implement a new minimum wage. They seek to fight corruption: implementing a maximum wage for politicians and introducing new transparency and regulations to party funding. In this event, there will presentations by speakers from RAZEM and RISE - Scotland's Left Alliance, followed by an open discussion about why the RAZEM movement is so important. The event happens in The Royal Oak, 1 Infirmary Street, EH1 1LT Edinburgh, United Kingdom.

IASH Pop-Up Forum "The Strange Death of the Liberal University": spies and border guards within the walls of academe?

Universities ought to be bastions of liberal thinking. So how should those working and studying within universities react to the imposition of securitisation measures in the area of immigration and counter-terrorism law? For international students, university staff are required to act effectively as border guards, by reporting presence and absence. Counter-terrorism law now requires that all university staff be involved in implementation of so-called “anti-extremism” measures which have been criticised for having an excessive focus on Muslim communities in the UK. These demands on universities seem counter-intuitively in contradiction with a liberal vocation. This informal pop-up forum brings together leading scholars and activists from a range of backgrounds to discuss these and related issues. Audience questions and comments will be welcomed. Attendees will be invited to stay on for more informal discussion over a informal wine reception. Moderator: Jo Shaw, IASH Director. Panellists: Rowena Arshad (Head of the Moray House School of Education, University of Edinburgh), Mary Senior (Scotland Official, Universities and College Union), Richard Haley (Scotland Against Criminalising Communities), Genevieve Lennon (Chancellor’s Fellow, School of Law, Strathclyde University).

Hands Over Our Forth a public protest against Underground Coal Gasification (UCG)

Anti-frack/Unconventional Gas Extraction (UGE) groups from across the central belt of Scotland and beyond - including community action groups and other organisations - will be joining forces to actively demonstrate to the Scottish Government, that UCG (Underground Coal Gasification) must be included in the current moratorium, from which it was omitted in the January 2015 statement. From then on, we will be demanding an all-out ban. We have the support of the Broad Alliance and regional action groups from all over Scotland and south of the border. People from all over Scotland are invited to join us in standing on the Forth Road Bridge, from North Queensferry side in Fife to South Queensferry side. In order to do this, we need as many volunteers as possible. It is estimated that we need approximately 1800 people to participate so if you're free and want to be part of urging our government to change something, please come along. If you know any local group/organisation/club who'd be interested in being involved, please share this information/FB event with them. Let's make a hUGE statement and not allow our government to ignore the public outcry and opposition to these processes. Your support is needed at this family-friendly event, organised by and for Scottish Communities, please bring your family, friends and neighbours. Hope to see you all, there! :)

John Ashton on fracking: for whom and at what cost former UK climate envoy turned activist speaks about why it is vital for communities to resist Fracking

The prospect of fracking for shale gas (and other unconventional forms of extraction) at an industrial scale looms over much of the UK. It is pitting communities against aggressive corporate and financial interests that have bet on its success, as well as their political backers. It threatens to deepen already serious national divisions and is putting local authorities in an impossible position. Our democratic systems are cracking under the strain. In response a new movement is coming together, in a new kind of activism. Led by local communities, it is rallying people from many walks of life to take a stand against fracking and build a path to our low carbon future. It is forging new citizen networks across the UK, and linking hands with similar networks around the world. Independent speaker and former UK climate envoy John Ashton is part of this new activism and has recently been involved in the struggle to keep fracking out of Lancashire. Drawing on his experiences in politics and diplomacy he will explain why he sees the resistance to fracking as critical, both for the response to climate change and for political renewal in the UK, as a basis for discussion about Scotland’s voice in the world. *** John Ashton CBE trained and worked briefly as a physicist, then spent 30 years as a British diplomat. From 2006-12 he was the Special Representative for Climate Change for three successive UK foreign secretaries. He cofounded think tank E3G and is a member of the advisory board of Post Crash Economics. Our chair will be Sally Foster-Fulton, Convener of the Church and Society Council of The Church of Scotland and Ambassador for the ACT Climate Alliance.

AYE to Refugees - NAE to Nazis (counter to "Scottish Defence League" demo against immigrants)

Edinburgh is a city that welcomes the world. We need to show our compassion again. On Saturday 3 October the racists and Nazis of the Scottish Defence League (SDL) plan a protest to whip up racial hatred, Islamophobia and division around the issue of refugees and migrants. This follows some terrible scare mongering stories in the press. The majority of decent people see the horrors of the war zones that refugees are escaping from and understand how desperate it must be if someone dares to leave everything behind including the people they love. For a refugee it is not about seeking an improved life it is about seeking a life worth living. A broad mobilisation of faith groups, civil right groups and trade unions, is planning to oppose the SDL's message of intolerance and racism with a peaceful march in defence of refugees and immigrants. This march has been initiated by Unite Against Fascism-Edinburgh but we seek the widest possible range of support. To add your name or the name of your organisation to this mobilisation please email : uafscotland@googlemail.com

Transnational Social Strike, 2 - 4 October 2015, Poznan, Poland Discussion on transnational strike coordination with participants from all over Europe. What do we need to effectively struggle against austerity, precarity and institutional racism all over Europe and beyond!

TRANSNATIONAL MEETING IN POZNAN 2/3/4th OCTOBER 2015 website: http://www.transnational-strike.info/ Austerity is now the new normality in Europe. In these years monetary policies have been used to enforce neo-liberal labour reforms, privatization of the commons, cuts in welfare benefits and less civil rights. European governments and financial institutions use debt and technical parameters as a political tool to play workers and populations against each other, as the blackmail against Greece has shown. A new government of mobility is creating hierarchies among, between and inside European regions and is trying to limit the movements of migrants from inside and outside the EU. The global chains of production and of care-work criss-cross the European space using the different wage regimes and labour legislations for the sake of profits, creating a deep gap between the few rich and many poor. Through outsourcing and subcontracting the strength and the power of strike action is challenged. The many existing struggles throughout Europe on wages, housing, welfare and freedom of movement are confronting, from different sides, the current attack on life and working conditions. Faced with the transnational dimension of these attack, it becomes apparent the need to overcome their isolation and to find common priorities. The new forms of mutualism and local self-organization which have developed since the crisis are confronted with the problem of enlargement and inability to communicate with other struggles on wage and working/living conditions. The capitalist divisions between permanent workers, temps and unemployed, migrants and locals, formal and informal sectors create obstacles to the organization of successful struggles inside and outside the workplaces, throughout all of society. While Trade Unions, associations and movements center their activity within a national context, the transnational dimension of the European government of mobility and labor requires the capacity to build a power on the same scale of the attacks deployed. In front of this situation, we want to build up a process for a transnational social strike that could create connections, organization, transnational communication and strengthen common bonds between social and labor struggles. The transnational social strike starts from the limits of traditional forms of social and labor struggles and the form of trade union organization, from the loss of power that the strike, even when general, has experienced due to precarization and the transnational dimension of production. The strike is the name of a practice and of a process of organization, that entails the need to bring labor (in all its current forms) back in the agenda of the social movements. At the same time, the question is how to make the transnational social strike a process of organization able to widen the scale of existing insubordination and produce new and more powerful struggles, inside and outside the workplaces. After the assembly held in Frankfurt on March 19th 2015, we want to take a step forward and meet in Poznan, Poland on the 2nd-4th October 2015. The meeting place in Poznan offers the opportunity to foster the participation from the Eastern countries of Europe that are at the center of the present regime of exploitation and to promote a deeper exchange among labor and social struggles across established borders and regions. In three days of panels, assemblies and workshops we want to keep focus on the singular situations, sharing experiences and tactics, and on how to build a political perspective able to become a reference point for the existing struggles as well as new ones to come. Some focuses for our discussions are: how do we organize resistances and claims in front of the transnational organization of production? How do we share common knowledge of the different conditions? How do we strike where the borders between the inside and the outside of the workplaces are blurring? Are the claims on European minimum wage, income, welfare and minimum residency permit for migrants able to work as tools of transnational organization and of connection between the already existing struggles in different cities and countries of Europe and beyond? How do we organize collectively against the fragmentation and individualization of labor? How to create connections between permanent and temporary workers? How to tackle the social conditions of exploitation? Everyone who is interested in building this process and in contributing to its organization is very welcome to participate in the meeting. OUTLINE OF THE PROGRAM: Friday 2nd (late afternoon): Introduction to the meeting Round table: challenges and possibilities of a transnational social strike Saturday 3rd: Plenary and introduction to the workshops Two sessions of workshop (3 hours each) Sunday 4th (finish @lunch time): Reports of the workshops and general assembly WORKSHOPS: The workshops will discuss how the transnational chains of production and the supply chains – and their intertwining with financial operations – have transformed production and how to rethink labour struggles and strikes, asking what it means today to organize inside and outside the workplaces. We therefore consider fundamental how we address the role of migrant labour and mobility, the issues of precarity and unemployment, and the transformations of the welfare system as part and parcel of the transnational organization of labour. Finally, we think that one important task of the meeting is to discuss and elaborate potential common claims. We understand such claims as more than simple demands, namely as tools to organize and foster transnational communication where exploitation and command produce divisions and hierarchies. For infos and suggestions please send an email to info.transnationalstrike@autistici.org before the 20th September 2015 . The event will be English, but we will try to provide translations into other languages, please let us know in advanced which languages or if you would like to volunteer to help translate during the event.

Occupy the Red Road flats - Stop the explosive demolition Sean Clerkin and a local resident speak about plans to stop environmental contamination

In 2012 two of the Red Road flats were demolished causing much damage to nearby housing and a month-long break in mains water supply. On Sun 11 October the remaining flats are to be explosively demolishing with the potential to cause similar or much more serious environmental contamination. Local residents want to stop this type of demolition in favour of a much safer floor-by-floor approach.

Hope Over Fear are organizing this 2015 event to coincide with the anniversary of the referendum and to make a clear statement that our journey to full Independence for our nation continues. Our First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon has stated clearly that it will be the people of Scotland who will determine if and when there is an #indyref2. Lets fill Freedom Square and the surrounding streets of Glasgow on September 19th to make our voices heard. 2018 is an ideal year for #indyref2 as it is clear in terms of elections north and south of the border. HOPE OVER FEAR: SEIZE THE DAY RALLY George Square, Glasgow. Lots of great speakers including Mark McGowan, The Artist Taxi Driver plus great music...

The Hope Over Fear campaign will not shirk its responsibilities. On May 7th 2015 we have a unique opportunity in Scotland to wipe out the blue, yellow and red Tories in one fell swoop. We can electorally punish those who lined up with the billionaires and millionaires to lie, deceive and bully our nation into submission. We are not too small, too poor or too scared to move forward into a new and better world and by uniting the pro-Scotland and anti-Establishment vote in May 2015 we can realise our dreams. Bring the family and enjoy another great day out while listening to the speakers from all political backgrounds and on the importance of using your vote wisely at the general election. There will also be many amazingly talented artists and musicians for you to enjoy on the day. In the words of Gerry Cinnamon's inspiring anthem of our movement, "Hope Over Fear, Carpe Diem". BBC Bias Peaceful Protest #2 Around 1:30 - 3:30pm BBC Bias Peaceful Protest #2 - The People's Voice!

BBC Bias Peaceful Protest #2 - The People's Voice! Sunday, June 29 at 1:30pm - 3:30pm BBC Scotland Studios, Pacific Quay G51 1 Glasgow, United Kingdom This is a protest against bias from the self-proclaimed “impartial” BBC. The most important issue we need to highlight is the repeated omission of relevant facts, information & answers that has kept Scotland in the dark about the real independence debate. The BBC’s coverage is ruining the run up to the biggest decision in our history. People are suitably sickened by the BBC & other mainstream media and their one sided conveyor belt of scare stories portrayed against our economic prospects, EU membership and the currency of an independent Scotland. Sometimes the bias is not in what they do cover but what they don't cover in their news & current affairs programmes. Specific examples of bias that concerns us are as follows: Make up of Question Time panels. Irish & Luxembourg EU ministers views misrepresented. UKIP promotion during EU elections. University of the West of Scotland report on bias on evening news programmes (BBC & STV) University of the West of Scotland report on bias on Radio Scotland Good Morning Scotland show The BBC's membership of the CBI which opposes independence and even tried to become an official member of the no campaign until a U turn after a mass cancellation of membership by Scottish companies. Different styles of questioning for Yes/No including more frequent interruptions from interviewers. The list goes on… Let's keep up the pressure on the old BBC and arrange their next outing as a massive anti-bias operation! Bring your saltires, banners, balloons, friends, family and loud voices. Make it a day to remember! Everyone is welcome from both sides of the debate. Groups that wish to protest about other instances of BBC bias unrelated to the independence debate are also more than welcome to attend.
