Iain Macwhirter Interview Iain Macwhirter will be joining us at 3pm, 31st Jan 2017 to talk about his recent article: Lord Supreme are not another Parcel o’ Rogues

Iain Macwhirter will be joining us at 3pm, 31st Jan 2017 to talk about his recent article: Lord Supreme are not another Parcel o’ Rogues. They’ve done Scots a favour rejecting veto on A50 (link below). In his article he highlights the implications of the recent Lords’ ruling regarding the Scottish Parliament’s relationship to Westminster and the Brexit process. Macwhirter suggests: "So are the Lords Supreme just another Parcel o’ Rogues? Not at all. Scotland should thank their Lordships for making crystal clear what many suspected: namely that the Sewel Convention, under which Westminster supposedly refrains from ruling on devolved issues without the consent of the Scottish Parliament, is froth, mince, tripe, baloney and codswallop. It has no legal force. The clause in the 2016 Scotland Act, which supposedly placed Sewel on a “statutory footing”, was just there to fool the natives into thinking their Parliament”s powers were “entrenched” and irreversible. Holyrood’s legislative powers are clearly and explicitly on loan from Westminster and liable to be over-ridden as and when the UK Government chooses." See full article here: https://iainmacwhirter.wordpress.com/2017/01/28/lord-supreme-are-not-another-parcel-o-rogues-theyve-done-scots-a-favour-rejecting-veto-on-a50/

Basic Income: real social security in advance of Fife's pilot citizen's basic income, an opportunity to explore the concept with speakers including Prof Karl Widerquist

Most of us have concerns about the current social security system. It doesn't make anyone feel secure. It is often seen as a form of control and a massive source of anxiety. In addition the world of work is changing and our system of social security seems stuck in the past. Maybe its time to test out something new? As Fife is leading the UK in exploring the opportunity to 'pilot' a Citizen's Basic Income Scheme (That is every citizen is given a set amount of money every month. This replaces much of social security and money is taken back from the wealthier through tax to also make it redistributive and will help to tackle poverty and inequality). We are delighted to have Professor Karl Widerquist as our keynote speaker. Professor Widerquest is one of the worlds leading advocates for basic income and co-chair of Basic Income Earth Network, a network of Basic Income organisations across the globe. 10.30 Welcome and Registration, Tea and Coffee . 10.45 Bring to Order Explanation of Day - Willie Sullivan Chair of CBINS Morning Session - Finding out about UBI (chaired by Willie Sullivan ) 10.50 Introduction to CBINS - Maddie Halliday – Trustee of CBINS ( 5mins) 10.55 Basic Income What and Why? - Professor Karl Widerquist (30 mins) 11.25 Why Fife? - Paul Vaughn , Head of Community and Corporate Development , Fife Council (10 mins) 11.35 Group Discussion Around Tables – Strengths and Weaknesses of BI (20 mins) 11.55 Questions to the Panel (35 mins) 12.30 Break for Lunch - Soup and Sandwich Afternoon Session - Getting to a Pilot (Chaired by Annie Miller) 13.00 Why a pilot ? - Speaker TBC (10mins) 13.10 The Pros and Cons of Pilots – Professor Karl Widerquist (10 mins) 13.20 Quick Q & A then speakers can circulate around the tables (10min) 13.40 Group Discussion around tables (20 mins) What are the Problems of a Fife Pilot? The Case for a Universal Basic Income The Buchanan Institute is proposing a universal basic income, a guaranteed weekly or monthly payment for all citizens, that will provide everyone with a secure financial foundation to build their lives.

Come along and hear about an idea that is gaining traction around the world and could transform our society. The Buchanan Institute is proposing a universal basic income, a guaranteed weekly or monthly payment for all citizens, that will provide everyone with a secure financial foundation to build their lives. We are delighted to be launching in partnership with the Royal Society of Arts (RSA) and that one of our confirmed speakers is Cllr Matt Kerr, who is leading the efforts to implement a basic income pilot for Glasgow citizens. This is a chance to come and hear and get involved in this transformative idea and how it can be implemented in Scotland and the UK in 2017 and beyond. There will be wine, beer and refreshments available at the beginning of the event too. We look forward to seeing you there! Read more about the Buchanan Institute's proposal below: A Secure Foundation to Build our Lives: Making the case for a Universal Basic Income The idea of a universal basic income, a guaranteed monthly or weekly payment paid equally to all citizens, is gaining traction among governments, politicians and policy makers across the world. Pilot schemes have recently been launched in the Netherlands, Finland, Canada, Namibia and India. In Scotland, the Councils of Fife and Glasgow are considering being the first places in the UK to introduce a UBI pilot experiment. Our economy has changed dramatically since much of the current welfare system was designed during the Second World War. The security of 'full employment' and 'jobs for life' have been largely replaced with a rise in part-time, flexible work, self-employment, the 'gig economy' and, for many, increasing insecurity. A growing coalition across the political spectrum believe our current, complex and often punitive welfare system is not fit for supporting people in this modern economy. It is the Buchanan Institute's contention that the current welfare system should be replaced with a universal basic income, providing everyone with a secure foundation to build their lives. Our proposal will give people guaranteed income security in an insecure job market, support re-training education and voluntary contributions (such as caring for elderly relatives) and always make work pay. It is also practical, financially achievable and could be implemented immediately with the necessary political will. For a more in-depth summary of the Buchanan Institute's universal basic income proposal, see here: https://www.thersa.org/discover/publications-and-articles/rsa-blogs/2016/12/universal-basic-income https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-case-for-a-universal-basic-income-launch-event-2612017-tickets-31127461074?aff=ehomefriend

A talk by Craig Murray: The Montrose Men Who Ruled India hosted by the Montrose Society at the George Hotel in Montrose

Craig Murray, former diplomat and Rector of Dundee University has recently published a full biography of Alexander Burnes of Montrose, titled 'Sikunder Burnes - Master of the Great Game'. Burnes (1801-1841), was born in Montrose and achieved fame as a spymaster, explorer, soldier, scientist and diplomat in early 19th c India. Burnes’ circle included many Angus men who ruled India. John Stuart Mill, great philosopher and son of James Mill of Northwater Bridge, each in turn secretary of the East India Company. James Skinner of Montrose, colonel of Skinner’s Horse, still India’s premier regiment. Allan Octavian Hume of Montrose founder of India’s Congress Party, the world’s largest political party, David Ouchterlonie of Montrose, conqueror of Nepal, George Buist of Dundee, editor of the Bombay Times. James Ramsay of Panmure, Governor General of India. Burnes also worked with Charles Lyell of Kirriemuir, founder of modern geology and tutor of Darwin. This is a wonderful opportunity to hear about a generation of Montrosians who made a true mark on History.

The Glasgow Effect A talk by Ellie Harrison followed by Q&A. The event is free and open to all.

Glasgow-based artist Ellie Harrison sparked a fast-and-furious debate about class, capitalism, art, education and much more, when details of her year-long project The Glasgow Effect went viral in January. Twelve months later, having slashed her own carbon footprint for transport to zero, she will talk about the sustainability of this 'sustainable lifestyle', the relationship between art and activism and the various local projects and campaigns she has been investing her time and energy in to help make Glasgow a more equal, connected and sustainable city. Followed by a Q&A chaired by Peter McCaughey. The event is free and open to all. It will take place at an accessible venue in Glasgow, which will be confirmed once we assess demand. Hope Over Fear are organizing this 2015 event to coincide with the anniversary of the referendum and to make a clear statement that our journey to full Independence for our nation continues. Our First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon has stated clearly that it will be the people of Scotland who will determine if and when there is an #indyref2. Lets fill Freedom Square and the surrounding streets of Glasgow on September 19th to make our voices heard. 2018 is an ideal year for #indyref2 as it is clear in terms of elections north and south of the border. HOPE OVER FEAR: SEIZE THE DAY RALLY George Square, Glasgow. Lots of great speakers including Mark McGowan, The Artist Taxi Driver plus great music...

The Hope Over Fear campaign will not shirk its responsibilities. On May 7th 2015 we have a unique opportunity in Scotland to wipe out the blue, yellow and red Tories in one fell swoop. We can electorally punish those who lined up with the billionaires and millionaires to lie, deceive and bully our nation into submission. We are not too small, too poor or too scared to move forward into a new and better world and by uniting the pro-Scotland and anti-Establishment vote in May 2015 we can realise our dreams. Bring the family and enjoy another great day out while listening to the speakers from all political backgrounds and on the importance of using your vote wisely at the general election. There will also be many amazingly talented artists and musicians for you to enjoy on the day. In the words of Gerry Cinnamon's inspiring anthem of our movement, "Hope Over Fear, Carpe Diem". Let’s seize the day in 2015. NOTE: Mark McGowan, The Artist Taxi Driver will be one of the speakers :) FACEBOOK EVENT: https://www.facebook.com/events/401561463337441/

BBC Bias Peaceful Protest #2 Around 1:30 - 3:30pm BBC Bias Peaceful Protest #2 - The People's Voice!

BBC Bias Peaceful Protest #2 - The People's Voice! Sunday, June 29 at 1:30pm - 3:30pm BBC Scotland Studios, Pacific Quay G51 1 Glasgow, United Kingdom This is a protest against bias from the self-proclaimed “impartial” BBC. The most important issue we need to highlight is the repeated omission of relevant facts, information & answers that has kept Scotland in the dark about the real independence debate. The BBC’s coverage is ruining the run up to the biggest decision in our history. People are suitably sickened by the BBC & other mainstream media and their one sided conveyor belt of scare stories portrayed against our economic prospects, EU membership and the currency of an independent Scotland. Sometimes the bias is not in what they do cover but what they don't cover in their news & current affairs programmes. Specific examples of bias that concerns us are as follows: Make up of Question Time panels. Irish & Luxembourg EU ministers views misrepresented. UKIP promotion during EU elections. University of the West of Scotland report on bias on evening news programmes (BBC & STV) University of the West of Scotland report on bias on Radio Scotland Good Morning Scotland show The BBC's membership of the CBI which opposes independence and even tried to become an official member of the no campaign until a U turn after a mass cancellation of membership by Scottish companies. Different styles of questioning for Yes/No including more frequent interruptions from interviewers. The list goes on… Let's keep up the pressure on the old BBC and arrange their next outing as a massive anti-bias operation! Bring your saltires, banners, balloons, friends, family and loud voices. Make it a day to remember! Everyone is welcome from both sides of the debate. Groups that wish to protest about other instances of BBC bias unrelated to the independence debate are also more than welcome to attend.
