Dr Alister Hamilton - Brexit, Oil and the World Economy Dr Hamilton:The application of engineering analysis allows numerical data relating to the status of the global oil production system to be derived for historical and future production. This reveals that conventional oil is no longer the rich source

"In this talk we shall briefly explore the parallels between the UK and “Arab Spring” countries with regard to indigenous primary energy supply dynamics, to show why the UK's vote to leave the European Union might be considered “The English Spring”. We shall show that the application of engineering analysis allows numerical data relating to the status of the global oil production system to be derived for historical and future production. This reveals that conventional oil is no longer the rich source of energy it once was, due to its inevitable depletion. While not apparent using economic analysis, the application of engineering techniques quantifies this process clearly, precisely and verifiably. The entropic decay of the oil production system affects both the price of oil, which will be range limited with a dramatically reducing maximum price, and economic growth rates throughout the world. The use of oil has historically boosted economic growth. We have analysis to show that by 2020 this will no longer be the case and that by 2030, the average barrel of oil will no longer act as an energy source. As a result of this process, production will cease. The world is about to receive an immense energy shock. It is essential that policy makers understand this issue in order to mitigate impact. This presentation will provide an executive briefing of the key issues."

Scotland After Brexit: Lessons from the Nordics highly eminent speakers from Iceland, Finland, Denmark, Norway and the Faroes look at the EU through a Nordic lens

A Nordic Horizons event with support from the University of Edinburgh. How should a small nation like Scotland engage with Europe -- the Nordic countries have experienced every conceivable variant on the theme. Denmark (since 1973), Sweden and Finland (since 1995) are all members of the EU. Iceland and Norway are not EU members but belong to the EEA – the European Economic Area that underpins the EU. Denmark’s devolved governments in the Faroes and Greenland are neither members of the EU nor EEA and only Finland has joined both the EU and the Euro zone. Travel is made easier by the fact that all Nordic nations – whether EU members or not – are part of the Schengen free travel zone. Currencies change at every border yet trade for most Nordic nations is with one another. Inevitably though this is not the whole story. Behind the national picture, attitudes to Europe and the EU in the Nordic region are as complex as anywhere else in Europe, fractured by differences between political parties, economic sectors and social groups and between town and country, core and periphery. Maybe there is something for Scotland to learn.

Academic freedom: "national security" threats in Turkey, India and the UK with speakers from Turkey, India and the UK

DESCRIPTION In the past year, neo-populist governments in Turkey and India have taken a series of actions in the name of the “nation” and “national security” against particular universities, individual academics and students who have raised questions or conducted research about these governments’ handling of separatist and oppositional movements. These actions challenge the future of academic freedom more generally. In the UK, government policies and laws on counter terrorism agendas, such as Prevent, now require universities and teachers to monitor speech and even thinking on campus in new ways, while the Home Office is outsourcing monitoring of international students to academics, making them de facto border guards. Against this background of general and specific threats to academic freedom from the national security state in these three countries, this one-day public event will allow us to jointly reflect on some key questions, such as: • Do we need to rethink what academic freedom means to address the kinds of threats universities are facing today? • How do national security logics intersect and magnify other threats to academic freedom? • How can we in the university resist the invasion of national security logics into the space of the university? • What strategies have proved effective in addressing the threats identified? Speakers from the three countries will focus on case studies of specific manifestations of such threats and develop theoretical analyses of these developments, as well as generate ideas for taking action to address them. We have also invited active members from the Reclaiming our University initiative at the University of Aberdeen: they will outline the strategies they have used to bring about change in their home institution, as a case study that will generate ideas on how to address the threats identified during the day. We will also have photo displays of scenes from India and Turkey related to the events discussed. Draft programme: 10:00-10:15am: Welcome 10:15-11:30am: Turkey panel: Who will be next? Academic labour and honour in times of war 11:45am-1:00pm: India panel: “Anti-national” charges deployed to suppress critical voices in universities 1:00-2:00pm: Lunch 2:00-3:15pm: UK panel: outsourcing surveillance to universities 3:15-4:15pm: General debate with panellists and all participants 4:30-6:00pm: Reclaiming our University—how to do it! 6:00-6:15pm: Wrap up 6:30-7:30pm: Reception and short films Speakers include: Prof. Nandini Sundar (Delhi School of Economics), Dr. Papia Sengupta (Jawaharlal Nehru University), Dr. Cetin Gürer (formerly at Nişantaşı University, currently Bremen University), Dr. Tuna Kuyucu (Boğaziçi University), Dr. Martin Mills (University of Aberdeen), Dr. Andrew Neal (University of Edinburgh), Ulrike Flader (DEMOS Research Centre for Peace, Democracy and Alternative Politics, Turkey) This event is funded by the School of Social and Political Science, the Global Justice Academy, the Citizens, Nations and Migration (CNaM) Network and the Centre for South Asian Studies, all at the University of Edinburgh. 'Resolution 20' Hemp & Medical Cannabis - SNP Fringe Event SNP Conference Fringe Event

During the SNP Autumn Conference, on Saturday the 15th at 12:30 to 1:30pm, we want to hold a fringe meeting to discuss and bring to wider attention the positive aspects of Medical Marijuana and Industrial Hemp and how they can benefit Scotland. We will do this by facilitating an open discussion and hopefully through this break the myths that surround Cannabis and Hemp. We have two speakers confirmed: Laura Brennan - Whitefield, who has MS and Alistair MacKinnon, who has continued side effects from hepatitis C infection; both conditions can be alleviated by the medical use of Cannabis. Across the globe, as the decriminalisation and legalisation of Cannabis continues, we know that we could be helped, as the accelerated pace of research surrounding the medicinal value of Cannabis becomes extensive. We also wish to see the rejuvenation and increase in the industrial production of Hemp. Historically, the cultivation of industrial Hemp in Scotland was widespread, from Caithness to the Lothians and from the Outer Hebrides to Galloway. With over 500 possible products, it is time for this extremely useful plant to be reinstated as an agricultural product and its uses supported by industry and Government. We hope that the outcomes of this initial discussion at Conference will, firstly, create a petition to the UK Government to devolve drugs policy to Scotland, and secondly, petition the Scottish Government to allow for the medicinal use of Cannabis as well as supporting and creating a Hemp industry. Fringe meetings at the SNP aren't cheap and we are hoping that crowdfunding will help ordinary members like ourselves to be able to fund a fringe meeting at conferences. We are looking for £1127 to cover costs and expenses. £1027 are the stated costs for the room, and £100 for printing documents, leaflets and flyers for the event day. https://www.gofundme.com/2ga3zfdk Please help us get this necessary discussion into the heart of Scottish politics.

UPDATED : Climate change: the view from Norway with Professor Tore Furevik. A Nordic Horizons event.

Norway is one of the most environmentally friendly countries in the world. Much of its energy comes from renewable sources, with hydro energy powering many towns and industries. Meanwhile Scotland prides itself on having the most ambitious climate change targets. But are either of these oil-producing North Sea neighbours facing up to the real speed of climate change? Temperatures in the high north are increasing faster than the world average. Permafrost and sea ice are disappearing. Fish stocks are changing. Melting of glaciers and the Greenland ice cap is raising sea levels. Across the world, the impacts of climate change on water and food security, and human health, will be dramatic. But beside these threats, sit commercial opportunities. Less sea ice makes commercial activities more attractive in the high north. This increases stress on an already vulnerable Arctic ecosystem. Is exploitation of oil and gas in harmony with 'green growth' and in line with the Paris agreement? Will deep sea mining become a safe industrial adventure or an environmental catastrophe? Who will benefit from changes in fish stocks? When will the northern transport routes become commercially attractive? Should tourism be limited? Tore Furevik is Professor in physical oceanography at the University of Bergen’s Geophysical Institute. SUPPORTED BY THE SCOTTISH GOVERNMENT. Sponsored by Claudia Beamish MSP.

Gathering, Mercat Cross, Glasgow Sean Clerkin launches his new group, Action for Scotland, with a lone piper and a burning of the union flag

Gathering at the Mercat Cross, Glasgow. Against the Unionist rule in Scotland. The Mercat Cross stands at the south-eastern corner of Glasgow Cross. Market crosses like this are found all over Scotland to mark the places where markets were legally held and this example represents one removed from Glasgow Cross in 1659. A town`s cross was often its symbolic centre as markets and other communal events took place beside it and the absence of such an important monument must have caused a bit of a dent in civic pride.

This event will put the democratic deficit and the radical decline of the British State in context, with speakers from across Europe, England, Scotland, the workers movement and youth. We'll be talking about the failure of British politics to change the lives of ordinary people, and how we can do things differently. In addition we will discuss and debate the changing terrain on which we must build a new grassroots movement for independence. Hope Over Fear are organizing this 2015 event to coincide with the anniversary of the referendum and to make a clear statement that our journey to full Independence for our nation continues. Our First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon has stated clearly that it will be the people of Scotland who will determine if and when there is an #indyref2. Lets fill Freedom Square and the surrounding streets of Glasgow on September 19th to make our voices heard. 2018 is an ideal year for #indyref2 as it is clear in terms of elections north and south of the border. (2016 Scottish parliament, 2017 Scottish council, 2019 English council and 2020 General election.) Join us on the Square with the message, #Indyref2 2018.

HOPE OVER FEAR: SEIZE THE DAY RALLY George Square, Glasgow. Lots of great speakers including Mark McGowan, The Artist Taxi Driver plus great music...

The Hope Over Fear campaign will not shirk its responsibilities. On May 7th 2015 we have a unique opportunity in Scotland to wipe out the blue, yellow and red Tories in one fell swoop. We can electorally punish those who lined up with the billionaires and millionaires to lie, deceive and bully our nation into submission. We are not too small, too poor or too scared to move forward into a new and better world and by uniting the pro-Scotland and anti-Establishment vote in May 2015 we can realise our dreams. Bring the family and enjoy another great day out while listening to the speakers from all political backgrounds and on the importance of using your vote wisely at the general election. There will also be many amazingly talented artists and musicians for you to enjoy on the day. In the words of Gerry Cinnamon's inspiring anthem of our movement, "Hope Over Fear, Carpe Diem". Let’s seize the day in 2015. NOTE: Mark McGowan, The Artist Taxi Driver will be one of the speakers :) FACEBOOK EVENT: https://www.facebook.com/events/401561463337441/

Red Road Flats Demolition RED ALERT DANGER DANGER Covering the controversial demolition of the Red Road Flats

ALSO here for protesters live stream within the danger zone http://livestre.am/5dlJI Highly contentious issue with many locals against the blowing up of these 6 flats at once and want them brought down floor by floor. The flats could still contain asbestos; they are very close to residential areas including a nursery and there is worry about water and gas pipes being burst. See WikiPedia link for more info and criticism of previous Red Row flats that have been blown up. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Road_Flats

BBC Bias Peaceful Protest #2 Around 1:30 - 3:30pm BBC Bias Peaceful Protest #2 - The People's Voice!

BBC Bias Peaceful Protest #2 - The People's Voice! Sunday, June 29 at 1:30pm - 3:30pm BBC Scotland Studios, Pacific Quay G51 1 Glasgow, United Kingdom This is a protest against bias from the self-proclaimed “impartial” BBC. The most important issue we need to highlight is the repeated omission of relevant facts, information & answers that has kept Scotland in the dark about the real independence debate. The BBC’s coverage is ruining the run up to the biggest decision in our history. People are suitably sickened by the BBC & other mainstream media and their one sided conveyor belt of scare stories portrayed against our economic prospects, EU membership and the currency of an independent Scotland. Sometimes the bias is not in what they do cover but what they don't cover in their news & current affairs programmes. Specific examples of bias that concerns us are as follows: Make up of Question Time panels. Irish & Luxembourg EU ministers views misrepresented. UKIP promotion during EU elections. University of the West of Scotland report on bias on evening news programmes (BBC & STV) University of the West of Scotland report on bias on Radio Scotland Good Morning Scotland show The BBC's membership of the CBI which opposes independence and even tried to become an official member of the no campaign until a U turn after a mass cancellation of membership by Scottish companies. Different styles of questioning for Yes/No including more frequent interruptions from interviewers. The list goes on… Let's keep up the pressure on the old BBC and arrange their next outing as a massive anti-bias operation! Bring your saltires, banners, balloons, friends, family and loud voices. Make it a day to remember! Everyone is welcome from both sides of the debate. Groups that wish to protest about other instances of BBC bias unrelated to the independence debate are also more than welcome to attend.
