John Perkins (born January 28, 1945) is an American author. His best known book is Confessions of an Economic Hit Man (2004), in which Perkins claims to have played a role in an alleged process of economic colonization of Third World countries on behalf of what he portrays as a cabal of corporations, banks, and the United States government. Bare Facts: Human Rights Bare Facts return to Cottiers after our sell out event in April, bringing you another stunning line up of musical talent and inspirational speakers. Human Rights are under the spotlight and Dr Cormac Mac Amhlaigh from Edinburgh University will give a frank talk on the contentious repeal of the Human Rights Act – the real story with no political spin. Our second speaker of the night is film director, Felipe Bustos Sierra, who will provide exclusive clips from his inspirational film Nae Pasaran – an untold story of Chilean solidarity. Scottish factory workers discover that their forgotten gesture of solidarity for Chile 40 years ago had incredible consequences. Winner of the Silver Mikeldi Award for Best Documentary at ZINEBI 2014, Spain Winner of the Best Documentary Award at Cortiamo 2014, Italy. With music from folk punk songstress, Chrissy Barnacle and award winning folk singer/songwriter, Karine Polwart, to stir your soul this is a night not to be missed. Doors open at 6.30pm. All proceeds from the event, after costs, will be donated to the following charities: Social Bite and the Scottish Action For Refugees. Speaker Bios Cormac Mac Amhlaigh is Lecturer in Public Law at the University of Edinburgh. He holds a Ph.d in law from the European University Institute in Florence (Italy), having previously studied law at Queen’s University Belfast (N. Ireland), The University of Zaragoza (Spain), and University College Dublin (Ireland). His research is primarily based in the field of constitutional law at both national and supranational levels, and includes research in the protection of human rights and constitutional reform at the UK and European levels and has published in these areas. He has also provided expert commentary in the media on matters of contemporary political and constitutional interest and has worked with and advised central and regional governments, government agencies and civil society groups on a variety of public law-related issues. Felipe Bustos Sierra a Chilean-Belgian filmmaker with Debasers Filums, a film production company in Edinburgh. Felipe has directed fiction and documentary short films, including "Three-Legged Horses" and "Nae Pasaran”, with the Scottish Documentary Institute. He was born in Brussels to an exiled Chilean journalist and those circumstances have heavily influenced his work. Felipe is currently in production of his first feature-length film, “Nae Pasaran”, which documents the humanitarian and political impact of the 1970s boycott of Chilean military engines by Scottish factory workers in protest against the brutal dictatorship of General Pinochet. The film is expected to be released in 2017. www.debasers.co.uk / www.naepasaran.com

GRAMnet: the refugee crisis in Calais discussing operations in Calais and the associated risks and challenges

In September 2015, Médecins Sans Frontière (MSF) launched relief activities in the refugee settlements and camps in Northern France, each of which hosts between a few hundred to several thousand people. This big and sudden influx left the local authorities, associations, and volunteers overwhelmed. MSF provides primary health care, shelters to the most vulnerable and has helped improve the sanitation for the five to six thousand migrants (as of Dec 2015) in what is known as the Calais "Jungle". Michaël Neuman – Director of Studies at MSF’s reflection centre and an advisor for MSF operations with migrants - will discuss MSF’s operations in Calais and the associated risks and challenges. The Chief Executive of the Scottish Refugee Council, John Wilkes, photographer Alice Myers and activist Fuad Alakbarov will also reflect on their experiences of the Calais camps. The event will be chaired by Professor John Briggs (University of Glasgow Clerk of Senate, Vice-Principal, Refugee Champion and Convenor of Glasgow Centre for International Development) and Professor Alison Phipps OBE (Convenor of Glasgow Refugee, Asylum and Migration Network). The event will be followed by refreshments.

Hope Over Fear are organizing this 2015 event to coincide with the anniversary of the referendum and to make a clear statement that our journey to full Independence for our nation continues. Our First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon has stated clearly that it will be the people of Scotland who will determine if and when there is an #indyref2. Lets fill Freedom Square and the surrounding streets of Glasgow on September 19th to make our voices heard. 2018 is an ideal year for #indyref2 as it is clear in terms of elections north and south of the border. (2016 Scottish parliament, 2017 Scottish council, 2019 English council and 2020 General election.) Join us on the Square with the message, #Indyref2 2018.

HOPE OVER FEAR: SEIZE THE DAY RALLY George Square, Glasgow. Lots of great speakers including Mark McGowan, The Artist Taxi Driver plus great music...

The Hope Over Fear campaign will not shirk its responsibilities. On May 7th 2015 we have a unique opportunity in Scotland to wipe out the blue, yellow and red Tories in one fell swoop. We can electorally punish those who lined up with the billionaires and millionaires to lie, deceive and bully our nation into submission. We are not too small, too poor or too scared to move forward into a new and better world and by uniting the pro-Scotland and anti-Establishment vote in May 2015 we can realise our dreams. Bring the family and enjoy another great day out while listening to the speakers from all political backgrounds and on the importance of using your vote wisely at the general election. There will also be many amazingly talented artists and musicians for you to enjoy on the day. In the words of Gerry Cinnamon's inspiring anthem of our movement, "Hope Over Fear, Carpe Diem". Let’s seize the day in 2015. NOTE: Mark McGowan, The Artist Taxi Driver will be one of the speakers :) FACEBOOK EVENT: https://www.facebook.com/events/401561463337441/

BBC Bias Peaceful Protest #2 - The People's Voice! Sunday, June 29 at 1:30pm - 3:30pm BBC Scotland Studios, Pacific Quay G51 1 Glasgow, United Kingdom This is a protest against bias from the self-proclaimed “impartial” BBC. The most important issue we need to highlight is the repeated omission of relevant facts, information & answers that has kept Scotland in the dark about the real independence debate. The BBC’s coverage is ruining the run up to the biggest decision in our history. People are suitably sickened by the BBC & other mainstream media and their one sided conveyor belt of scare stories portrayed against our economic prospects, EU membership and the currency of an independent Scotland. Sometimes the bias is not in what they do cover but what they don't cover in their news & current affairs programmes. Specific examples of bias that concerns us are as follows: Make up of Question Time panels. Irish & Luxembourg EU ministers views misrepresented. UKIP promotion during EU elections. University of the West of Scotland report on bias on evening news programmes (BBC & STV) University of the West of Scotland report on bias on Radio Scotland Good Morning Scotland show The BBC's membership of the CBI which opposes independence and even tried to become an official member of the no campaign until a U turn after a mass cancellation of membership by Scottish companies. Different styles of questioning for Yes/No including more frequent interruptions from interviewers. The list goes on… Let's keep up the pressure on the old BBC and arrange their next outing as a massive anti-bias operation! Bring your saltires, banners, balloons, friends, family and loud voices. Make it a day to remember! Everyone is welcome from both sides of the debate. Groups that wish to protest about other instances of BBC bias unrelated to the independence debate are also more than welcome to attend.
