Refugee Crisis: in dialogue with volunteers along the route A Conversation with Refugee Crisis volunteers Deirdre Tunney & Miranda Barty-Taylor

Gavin talks to two volunteers who helped out in the Refugee Crisis over the Christmas period. Deirdre Tunney went to help in the Leros refugee camp & https://www.facebook.com/lerossn/?fref=ts Miranda Barty-Taylor who went to help in the Dobova refugee camp http://www.aidboxconvoy.co.uk/ https://www.facebook.com/Team-Humanity-Van-1495460617450440/?ref=ts&fref=ts&__mref=message_bubble On the day Team Humanity Van returned from Dobova, the British Parliament were deciding upon whether or not to bomb Syria. Miranda wrote the following letter to David Cameron on the ferry back to Dover: Dear David Cameron, I write this from the ferry from Dunkirk to Dover. I am standing at the back of the boat staring back at the frothy, grey-blue waves. I have just delivered tents and sleeping bags to Grande-Synthe refugee camp, and before that had driven with five friends to Slovenia, with two supply vans full of shoes, winter clothes and medications. We're on our way home. I write this not to boast, but to contextualise my impotent rage as I stare at the arbitrary piece of sea which means that I can depend on sleeping in a bed tonight, and that those we left behind cannot. I write to justify my frustrated tears as I think about those we helped at Dobova train station. As I walked past the debate on the TV to come out here to the sea and the salt-wind, I heard you all discussing "the risk of civilian casualties." I rage, rage against what I know to be inevitable. I write not to beg and plead. I know you will make a decision based on your own version of what is right - a reality so far from what is happening at that station as to be farcical. My head is filled with faces from that night shift, faces full of uncertainty. I remember the young man who gripped my arm compassionately when I explained to him that I didn't have a hat for him - that we'd run out. HE comforted ME. I remember the two year old who told me clearly he needed a jacket. His parents were busy finding shoes. But he knew enough to grab my attention and gesture to the piece of clothing he desperately lacked. The winds were bitter that night. I'm glad I found him a jacket. I remember the eyes of the boy travelling alone, not more than fifteen, who at 3am stepped out of the line and, shivering, pointed to the ground and asked, "Osterrich?" He didn't even know where he was. You have a chance to be remembered in history as making the brave, fore-sighted choice. Of breaking the cycle - the obvious, obvious cycle - of war, displacement, resentment, hatred and terrorism. You have the chance to make the humanitarian choice. I wish you would do a night shift at Dobova train station. I write this with no expectations. I am exhausted from days of driving through Europe. I write this because I don't know what else to do. I am weeping into the wind. And I am praying to whatever the hell may be out there that you make the only choice that makes any sense at all.

Jenny Hill - Songs of Separation Gavin talks to Jenny Hill about the Songs of Separation project

Gavin talks to Jenny about the Songs Of Separation Project About the project: Eigg hills & fields Songs of Separation brought together ten female folk musicians from Scotland and England, to create a recording which reflects on the issue of ‘separation’ in its many forms, through traditional song. Celebrating the similarities and differences in our musical, linguistic and cultural heritage, and set in the context of a post-referendum world, the work aims to evoke emotional responses and prompt new thinking about the issue of separation as it occurs in all our lives. The collected songs will aim to get to the heart of what we feel when we are faced with a separation, both good and bad. Providing a ‘thread through time’, joining us to previous generations who shared the same human experiences and responses to separation, and to the generations that will follow. Taking place on the beautiful Isle of Eigg in June 2015, the musicians spent an intensive week rehearsing and recording, including site recordings at the two sites central to the ‘Big Women of Eigg’ legend. The SoS musician team brought together the musical skills and ‘big thinking’ of Eliza Carthy and Karine Polwart, two of the UK’s most celebrated voices, Mary Macmaster and Kate Young, two boundary-breaking Scots, Hannah James, Hazel Askew and Rowan Rheingans, from the award winning English ensemble Lady Maisery, Jenn Butterworth and Jenny Hill, brilliant backline players who have worked in both English and Scottish trad scenes, and Hannah Read, a New York-based musician who spent much of her childhood on the Isle of Eigg. It was an unforgettable week of wonderful music making and compelling discussion! We have been sharing the progress of the work through short films, released during the week of the recording (see our youtube channel), and we are currently working on a ‘making of’ documentary, to go with the album, with a planned release in January 2016.

Hope Over Fear are organizing this 2015 event to coincide with the anniversary of the referendum and to make a clear statement that our journey to full Independence for our nation continues. Our First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon has stated clearly that it will be the people of Scotland who will determine if and when there is an #indyref2. Lets fill Freedom Square and the surrounding streets of Glasgow on September 19th to make our voices heard. 2018 is an ideal year for #indyref2 as it is clear in terms of elections north and south of the border. (2016 Scottish parliament, 2017 Scottish council, 2019 English council and 2020 General election.) Join us on the Square with the message, #Indyref2 2018.

HOPE OVER FEAR: SEIZE THE DAY RALLY George Square, Glasgow. Lots of great speakers including Mark McGowan, The Artist Taxi Driver plus great music...

The Hope Over Fear campaign will not shirk its responsibilities. On May 7th 2015 we have a unique opportunity in Scotland to wipe out the blue, yellow and red Tories in one fell swoop. We can electorally punish those who lined up with the billionaires and millionaires to lie, deceive and bully our nation into submission. We are not too small, too poor or too scared to move forward into a new and better world and by uniting the pro-Scotland and anti-Establishment vote in May 2015 we can realise our dreams. Bring the family and enjoy another great day out while listening to the speakers from all political backgrounds and on the importance of using your vote wisely at the general election. There will also be many amazingly talented artists and musicians for you to enjoy on the day. In the words of Gerry Cinnamon's inspiring anthem of our movement, "Hope Over Fear, Carpe Diem". Let’s seize the day in 2015. NOTE: Mark McGowan, The Artist Taxi Driver will be one of the speakers :) FACEBOOK EVENT: https://www.facebook.com/events/401561463337441/

BBC Bias Peaceful Protest #2 Around 1:30 - 3:30pm BBC Bias Peaceful Protest #2 - The People's Voice!

BBC Bias Peaceful Protest #2 - The People's Voice! Sunday, June 29 at 1:30pm - 3:30pm BBC Scotland Studios, Pacific Quay G51 1 Glasgow, United Kingdom This is a protest against bias from the self-proclaimed “impartial” BBC. The most important issue we need to highlight is the repeated omission of relevant facts, information & answers that has kept Scotland in the dark about the real independence debate. The BBC’s coverage is ruining the run up to the biggest decision in our history. People are suitably sickened by the BBC & other mainstream media and their one sided conveyor belt of scare stories portrayed against our economic prospects, EU membership and the currency of an independent Scotland. Sometimes the bias is not in what they do cover but what they don't cover in their news & current affairs programmes. Specific examples of bias that concerns us are as follows: Make up of Question Time panels. Irish & Luxembourg EU ministers views misrepresented. UKIP promotion during EU elections. University of the West of Scotland report on bias on evening news programmes (BBC & STV) University of the West of Scotland report on bias on Radio Scotland Good Morning Scotland show The BBC's membership of the CBI which opposes independence and even tried to become an official member of the no campaign until a U turn after a mass cancellation of membership by Scottish companies. Different styles of questioning for Yes/No including more frequent interruptions from interviewers. The list goes on… Let's keep up the pressure on the old BBC and arrange their next outing as a massive anti-bias operation! Bring your saltires, banners, balloons, friends, family and loud voices. Make it a day to remember! Everyone is welcome from both sides of the debate. Groups that wish to protest about other instances of BBC bias unrelated to the independence debate are also more than welcome to attend.
