197Can we have affordable houses and cities in Scotland? RISE - Scotland's Left Alliance invites everybody in Scotland to discuss together housing and planning issues.

Tahl Kaminer (Architecture, University of Edinburgh) and Hamish Kalin (Geography, University of Edinburgh) will start this discussion by revealing how the current legislation and administrative processes favour developers’ interests. The event is hosted by the Lothian RISE Circle, and will be chaired by RISE list candidate Sophia Lycouris. Join us (either in the venue or online) to consider options for radical planning and housing policies in Scotland, which will be developed by RISE with the support of the best specialists in these fields. This is a process which builds on RISE's existing policy for building 100,000 new green council houses, and also challenging landownership for the benefit of strong communities.

Skelf is a Bike trails and pump track that is being built in the Braidwoods area of Hollyrood Park. The Project has attracted some criticism from some residents regarding the consultation for the project. "The trails and track will be built in a sliver of self-seeded woodland that is currently poorly managed and plagued by antisocial behaviour. The trails and pump track have been designed by some of the worlds best trail designers and will suit all levels of ability, from beginners to experienced riders. Independence Live will be filming the opening speeches at 11am to 11:30am and the Right to Remain (‘Practical Solidarity’) workshop at 12pm to 1pm. Practical solidarity People seeking the right to remain in the UK face many barriers - legal, procedural, emotional, social and economic - which prevent them from establishing their rights. This workshop will give an overview of these barriers, and ways that we can support people to take action in their own cases. Challenging systemic injustice Migrants to the UK face a "hostile environment" of legal and social exclusion; measures brought in by successive governments with the explicit aim of making life difficult and preventing people from establishing their right to remain. This workshop will discuss some of the key policy areas of concern, and current and potential campaigns.

Award winning Scottish documentary maker David Graham Scott joins us to discuss his work and his first hand experiences of psychedelic healing. Iboga Nights https://vimeo.com/130630278 MORE... David Graham Scott is one of the most remarkable documentary makers in Scotland. Over the years he has built up a wide body of work, dealing with subjects ranging from a trainee hangman who lost his job with the abolition of capital punishment (Hanging with Frank) to the day to day routine of junkies in Glasgow's west end in obtaining cash for their next fix (Little Criminals). In the process he has put himself into some crazy situations, from becoming the Digger's court photographer and having to chase alleged paedophiles to make a documentary on the infamous newspaper (The Dirty Digger), getting himself addicted to heroin when getting too close to his subjects (Little Criminals), and taking a life-thereatening hallucinogen to get off of heroin (the award-winning Detox or Die). For his new film, End of the Game, Scott, a committed vegan, took an ageing eccentric from Caithness to Africa for his last big game shoot. While Scott's films have proven controversial, they are never sensationalistic. The films display a rare empathy for their subjects, and are serious explorations of subjects that others often shy away from. Tonight's Independence Live interview is certain to be an interesting one.

URGENT SOLIDARITY CALL-OUT - HIGH RIGGS JOB CENTRE MON 14TH MARCH 3PM Friday, March 11, 2016 On Monday 29th Feb Edinburgh Claimants provided an accompanier for a claimant who had come to us for support after being intimidated and bullied during interviews at High Riggs Jobcentre. Past experience at High Riggs where staff (up to management level) have attempted to obstruct claimants being accompanied by making up arbitary rules, such as that accompaniers need to show ID, led Edinburgh Coalition Against Poverty to hold a leafletting session outside in case solidarity was required. When the claimant and his accompanier attempted to enter, four G4S security guards blocked the way, physically separated the claimant from his accompanier and asserted that the claimant had no right to be accompanied. The four volunteers leafletting came to the door to insist on the claimants rights and were physically assaulted and menaced by the security guards. This is the latest in a catalogue of bullying, harrassment and denial of rights at High Riggs stretching back over the last two years. It is vital that we don't let them get away with this any longer. The same claimant is being accompanied by the same volunteer at the next signing date on MONDAY 14TH MARCH. EDINBURGH COALITION AGAINST POVERTY ARE THEREFORE CALLING FOR A LARGE SCALE SOLIDARITY ACTION AT HIGH RIGGS JOBCENTRE ON MONDAY 14TH MARCH AT 3PM. THE RIGHT TO BE ACCOMPANIED AT APPOINTMENTS IS FUNDAMENTAL IN PROTECTING CLAIMANTS FROM ISOLATION AND BULLYING. PLEASE COME ALONG TO HELP ASSERT THIS RIGHT. 126Moving Kiruna - a community reinventing its city with Krister Lindstedt (Architect) and chaired by Lesley Riddoch

The city of Kiruna in the north of Sweden is about to undergo one of the biggest urban transformations of our time. Due to land deformation caused by mining activity the entire city must be relocated approximately two miles east over the course of the next century. The relocation is a huge challenge, provoking anxiety and anticipation among the 18,200 citizens. But it is also an unparalleled opportunity for Kiruna to transform itself into a more environmentally, socially and economically sustainable city. White’s competition-winning vision for the transformation project, financed by the mining company, aims to create a sustainable model city that is less dependent on the world market for iron ore. The new Kiruna will offer residents a better place to live whilst transposing the character, familiarity and sense of place of the Kiruna they know. Is there anything Scotland can learn from this painstaking consultation to make sure big strategic changes to towns and cities are properly considered and gain popular support? Krister Lindstedt has 30 years of experience as an architect and urban planner. His strategies are always underpinned by thorough research and citizen dialogue, which is key as Lead Architect of the master plan and the sustainability strategy for the transformation of Kiruna.

Hope Over Fear are organizing this 2015 event to coincide with the anniversary of the referendum and to make a clear statement that our journey to full Independence for our nation continues. Our First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon has stated clearly that it will be the people of Scotland who will determine if and when there is an #indyref2. Lets fill Freedom Square and the surrounding streets of Glasgow on September 19th to make our voices heard. 2018 is an ideal year for #indyref2 as it is clear in terms of elections north and south of the border. (2016 Scottish parliament, 2017 Scottish council, 2019 English council and 2020 General election.) Join us on the Square with the message, #Indyref2 2018.

HOPE OVER FEAR: SEIZE THE DAY RALLY George Square, Glasgow. Lots of great speakers including Mark McGowan, The Artist Taxi Driver plus great music...

The Hope Over Fear campaign will not shirk its responsibilities. On May 7th 2015 we have a unique opportunity in Scotland to wipe out the blue, yellow and red Tories in one fell swoop. We can electorally punish those who lined up with the billionaires and millionaires to lie, deceive and bully our nation into submission. We are not too small, too poor or too scared to move forward into a new and better world and by uniting the pro-Scotland and anti-Establishment vote in May 2015 we can realise our dreams. Bring the family and enjoy another great day out while listening to the speakers from all political backgrounds and on the importance of using your vote wisely at the general election. There will also be many amazingly talented artists and musicians for you to enjoy on the day. In the words of Gerry Cinnamon's inspiring anthem of our movement, "Hope Over Fear, Carpe Diem". Let’s seize the day in 2015. NOTE: Mark McGowan, The Artist Taxi Driver will be one of the speakers :) FACEBOOK EVENT: https://www.facebook.com/events/401561463337441/

BBC Bias Peaceful Protest #2 Around 1:30 - 3:30pm BBC Bias Peaceful Protest #2 - The People's Voice!

BBC Bias Peaceful Protest #2 - The People's Voice! Sunday, June 29 at 1:30pm - 3:30pm BBC Scotland Studios, Pacific Quay G51 1 Glasgow, United Kingdom This is a protest against bias from the self-proclaimed “impartial” BBC. The most important issue we need to highlight is the repeated omission of relevant facts, information & answers that has kept Scotland in the dark about the real independence debate. The BBC’s coverage is ruining the run up to the biggest decision in our history. People are suitably sickened by the BBC & other mainstream media and their one sided conveyor belt of scare stories portrayed against our economic prospects, EU membership and the currency of an independent Scotland. Sometimes the bias is not in what they do cover but what they don't cover in their news & current affairs programmes. Specific examples of bias that concerns us are as follows: Make up of Question Time panels. Irish & Luxembourg EU ministers views misrepresented. UKIP promotion during EU elections. University of the West of Scotland report on bias on evening news programmes (BBC & STV) University of the West of Scotland report on bias on Radio Scotland Good Morning Scotland show The BBC's membership of the CBI which opposes independence and even tried to become an official member of the no campaign until a U turn after a mass cancellation of membership by Scottish companies. Different styles of questioning for Yes/No including more frequent interruptions from interviewers. The list goes on… Let's keep up the pressure on the old BBC and arrange their next outing as a massive anti-bias operation! Bring your saltires, banners, balloons, friends, family and loud voices. Make it a day to remember! Everyone is welcome from both sides of the debate. Groups that wish to protest about other instances of BBC bias unrelated to the independence debate are also more than welcome to attend.

Class and nation in contemporary Scotland: day 2 A full day conference with 5 different discussion panels

Session 1, "Contemporary Racisms", speakers: Colin Clark, Nasar Meer, Gina Netto and Suki Sangha , chair: Ashli Mullen. Session 2, "Sectarianism – or anti-Irish Catholic Racism?", speakers: Maureen McBride, Michael Rosie, Satnam Virdee, chair: Minna Liinpää. Session 3, "Class, Inequality and Gentrification", speakers: Ewan Gibbs, Gerry Mooney and Kirsteen Paton, chair: Maureen McBride. Session 4, "Movements and Neoliberalism", speakers: Robin McAlpine, Sinead O'Donnell Dunn, Jonathon Shafi, chair: Neil Davidson. Session 5, "Did the Yes Campaign Represent the Triumph of Nation over Class?", speakers: Neil Davidson and John Foster, chair: Satnam Virdee. Concluding remarks and close of conference, speaker: Bridget Fowler. The Independence Referendum campaign of 2014 and the British General Election of 2015 have transformed Scottish politics: the former giving rise to a social movement comparable to those of Spain and Greece, the latter consolidating the rise of the SNP signalling the collapse of the once-mighty Scottish Labour Party into electoral irrelevance. Yet the underlying sociological changes beneath these events have received relatively little attention. In particular, while fantastical claims about Scotland being dominated by increasingly affluent middle-class professionals have not survived the recession, nothing has replaced them, and discussions of the Yes vote and SNP's current hegemony simply assume that this is the result of a turn to 'nationalism' when in fact it reflects, at least in part, a search for a social democratic alternative to Labour. This conference seeks to address these issues of class structure and national identity, and related issues of racism, sectarianism and mass movements. Open to both academics and activists, we intend that our programme of lectures, panels and debates - all followed by open discussion - will contribute to deepening public understanding of the 'New Scotland'.

Exactly two years on from the referendum, The Scottish Independence Convention are having a social event for all interested Indy groups to launch the next phase... to bring us all together, encourage dialogue, listen to some speeches, poetry, comedy and enjoy some music. We need all that energy, artistic endeavour, hard work and good old political discussion to get started again ( though it has never really gone away) and we need to establish a gathering place for all the groups, individuals, artists and ideas that made the Yes movement so vital in the journey towards self determination and Independence.
