Speakers include @RozFoyer, @HumzaYousaf, @AnasSarwar, @robinaqureshi, @AamerAnwar All speakers: https://www.facebook.com/events/451610132373748/ SPEAKERS - Michael Brown, Black Lives Matter chapter co-founder from Long Beach, California - Humza Yousaf, Scottish Government Justice Secretary - Anas Sarwar, convenor of Holyrood Cross-Party Group on Tackling Islamophobia - Rozanne Foyer, STUC general secretary designate - Aamer Anwar, Sheku Bayoh's family lawyer - Robina Qureshi, Positive Action in Housing director - Weyman Bennett, Stand Up To Racism national co-convenor Others TBA The racist murder of George Floyd by a police officer in the US has sparked a wave of opposition to racism and millions of people across the world taking a stand to say #JusticeForGeorgeFloyd #BlackLivesMatter Ethnic minorities being killed at the hands of the police is far from an exclusive problem of the US. In Scotland, the family of Sheku Bayoh, who died in Kirkcaldy in 2015 after being brutally restrained by police officers, is still fighting for justice. Meanwhile, the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on BAME communities has shone a light on systemic injustices and institutional racism, but the government has attempted to cover this up by removing a section of the Public Health England report on institutional racism. Stand Up To Racism has launched a statement calling for an independent public inquiry on disproportionate BAME deaths during the pandemic. You can sign it here: https://bit.ly/sutrstatement Join this rally discussing how we can fight for justice for BAME communities and turn the new wave of anger over racism and injustice into an effective movement for change.

LIVE 6PM Black Lives Matter - we can't breathe. Justice for Sheku Bayoh Various speakers on Sheku Bayoh #BlackLivesMatter

Online ZOOM event by the STUC. https://www.stuc.org.uk/ Confirmed and invited speakers (others to be announced) Kadie Johnson: Sister of Sheku Bayoh Aamer Anwar: Lawyer for the Sheku Bayoh Family Layla-Roxanne Hill: STUC Black Workers Committee Suki Sangha Cllr Graham Campbell: SNP NEC BAME Convener Usman Ali: Chair STUC Black Workers Committee Anas Sarwar MSP Hannah Lavery: Playwright Rozanne Foyer: General Secretary Designate STUC The events over the past weeks have shone a light not only upon the ingrained racism in the US, but across the world, not least in Scotland and the UK. The STUC fully understands the depth of anger and desire to show solidarity that is moving people to attend the physical rally in Glasgow Green on Sunday. However, given the threat to our communities of coronavirus, we cannot in all conscience advise people to attend that event. But people want to protest. And people want to know what they can do. A fresh light has been shone on the death and injury of black and minority ethnic people in the Scottish and UK justice systems. It is a violent and sickening symptom of a deeper and wider problem which poses questions for all of our institutions. These are questions that the STUC Black Workers Committee has consistently sought to address, but all too often their voices and the voices of all black workers in Scotland have not been heard. The imperative to recognise our own privilege and challenge ourselves at this time extends to the trade union movement. This moment demands that we never be satisfied with our responses thus far. It is our duty to ensure that what is happening now is not just a moment of anger and solidarity. Rather our duty is to make this a beginning of an examination of our response to racism and our commitment to stamp it out. The STUC begins that process, following consultation with BAME trade unionists and other activists, by recommitting to the Justice for Sheku Bayoh Campaign. Sheku’s family have fought for justice for over five years. Each and every one of us has a duty to right that wrong. In righting that wrong we can begin a journey to challenging a thousand injustices and rooting out the deep-seated racism within our society. Stream by Independence Live, streaming since 2013

Hope Over Fear are organizing this 2015 event to coincide with the anniversary of the referendum and to make a clear statement that our journey to full Independence for our nation continues. Our First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon has stated clearly that it will be the people of Scotland who will determine if and when there is an #indyref2. Lets fill Freedom Square and the surrounding streets of Glasgow on September 19th to make our voices heard. 2018 is an ideal year for #indyref2 as it is clear in terms of elections north and south of the border. (2016 Scottish parliament, 2017 Scottish council, 2019 English council and 2020 General election.) Join us on the Square with the message, #Indyref2 2018.

HOPE OVER FEAR: SEIZE THE DAY RALLY George Square, Glasgow. Lots of great speakers including Mark McGowan, The Artist Taxi Driver plus great music...

The Hope Over Fear campaign will not shirk its responsibilities. On May 7th 2015 we have a unique opportunity in Scotland to wipe out the blue, yellow and red Tories in one fell swoop. We can electorally punish those who lined up with the billionaires and millionaires to lie, deceive and bully our nation into submission. We are not too small, too poor or too scared to move forward into a new and better world and by uniting the pro-Scotland and anti-Establishment vote in May 2015 we can realise our dreams. Bring the family and enjoy another great day out while listening to the speakers from all political backgrounds and on the importance of using your vote wisely at the general election. There will also be many amazingly talented artists and musicians for you to enjoy on the day. In the words of Gerry Cinnamon's inspiring anthem of our movement, "Hope Over Fear, Carpe Diem". Let’s seize the day in 2015. NOTE: Mark McGowan, The Artist Taxi Driver will be one of the speakers :) FACEBOOK EVENT: https://www.facebook.com/events/401561463337441/

BBC Bias Peaceful Protest #2 Around 1:30 - 3:30pm BBC Bias Peaceful Protest #2 - The People's Voice!

BBC Bias Peaceful Protest #2 - The People's Voice! Sunday, June 29 at 1:30pm - 3:30pm BBC Scotland Studios, Pacific Quay G51 1 Glasgow, United Kingdom This is a protest against bias from the self-proclaimed “impartial” BBC. The most important issue we need to highlight is the repeated omission of relevant facts, information & answers that has kept Scotland in the dark about the real independence debate. The BBC’s coverage is ruining the run up to the biggest decision in our history. People are suitably sickened by the BBC & other mainstream media and their one sided conveyor belt of scare stories portrayed against our economic prospects, EU membership and the currency of an independent Scotland. Sometimes the bias is not in what they do cover but what they don't cover in their news & current affairs programmes. Specific examples of bias that concerns us are as follows: Make up of Question Time panels. Irish & Luxembourg EU ministers views misrepresented. UKIP promotion during EU elections. University of the West of Scotland report on bias on evening news programmes (BBC & STV) University of the West of Scotland report on bias on Radio Scotland Good Morning Scotland show The BBC's membership of the CBI which opposes independence and even tried to become an official member of the no campaign until a U turn after a mass cancellation of membership by Scottish companies. Different styles of questioning for Yes/No including more frequent interruptions from interviewers. The list goes on… Let's keep up the pressure on the old BBC and arrange their next outing as a massive anti-bias operation! Bring your saltires, banners, balloons, friends, family and loud voices. Make it a day to remember! Everyone is welcome from both sides of the debate. Groups that wish to protest about other instances of BBC bias unrelated to the independence debate are also more than welcome to attend.

Class and nation in contemporary Scotland: day 2 A full day conference with 5 different discussion panels

Session 2, "Sectarianism – or anti-Irish Catholic Racism?", speakers: Maureen McBride, Michael Rosie, Satnam Virdee, chair: Minna Liinpää. Session 3, "Class, Inequality and Gentrification", speakers: Ewan Gibbs, Gerry Mooney and Kirsteen Paton, chair: Maureen McBride. Session 4, "Movements and Neoliberalism", speakers: Robin McAlpine, Sinead O'Donnell Dunn, Jonathon Shafi, chair: Neil Davidson. Session 5, "Did the Yes Campaign Represent the Triumph of Nation over Class?", speakers: Neil Davidson and John Foster, chair: Satnam Virdee. Concluding remarks and close of conference, speaker: Bridget Fowler. The Independence Referendum campaign of 2014 and the British General Election of 2015 have transformed Scottish politics: the former giving rise to a social movement comparable to those of Spain and Greece, the latter consolidating the rise of the SNP signalling the collapse of the once-mighty Scottish Labour Party into electoral irrelevance. Yet the underlying sociological changes beneath these events have received relatively little attention. In particular, while fantastical claims about Scotland being dominated by increasingly affluent middle-class professionals have not survived the recession, nothing has replaced them, and discussions of the Yes vote and SNP's current hegemony simply assume that this is the result of a turn to 'nationalism' when in fact it reflects, at least in part, a search for a social democratic alternative to Labour. This conference seeks to address these issues of class structure and national identity, and related issues of racism, sectarianism and mass movements. Open to both academics and activists, we intend that our programme of lectures, panels and debates - all followed by open discussion - will contribute to deepening public understanding of the 'New Scotland'.

The People's Assembly is calling a national week of protest from 3 - 7 October with events across Manchester. Scottish Independence Convention Presents The Reassembly Elaine C Smith will be hosting the many guests from across the country and the movement... and we will then be able to get down to some serious discussion about the way ahead...

Exactly two years on from the referendum, The Scottish Independence Convention are having a social event for all interested Indy groups to launch the next phase... to bring us all together, encourage dialogue, listen to some speeches, poetry, comedy and enjoy some music. We need all that energy, artistic endeavour, hard work and good old political discussion to get started again ( though it has never really gone away) and we need to establish a gathering place for all the groups, individuals, artists and ideas that made the Yes movement so vital in the journey towards self determination and Independence. Elaine C Smith will be hosting the many guests from across the country and the movement... and we will then be able to get down to some serious discussion about the way ahead.
