WOMEN AND THE GLASGOW RENT STRIKE : Hosted by SWP Glasgow

Discussion introduced by Fatima Uygun on the inspirational 1915 Glasgow Rent Strike where women played a leading role in fighting exploiting landlords and forced the Government to introduce rent controls. The First World War saw a number of rent strikes break out across Britain. But the 1915 Glasgow rent strike stands out, in no small part due to the context of Clydeside at that time.

Who owns Scotland's Land and how this matters in the 21st Century Andy Wightman is an expert on land ownership in Scotland and what he addresses in his books and articles is how power is exercised in Scotland through Land

Andy Wightman is an expert on land ownership in Scotland and what he addresses in his books and articles is how power is exercised in Scotland through Land; in our past and to this day and have attempts to redistribute this power more equitably made any difference? These are the questions that have beset Andy for the last 20 years: Who Owns Scotland? How did they get it? What happened to all the common land in Scotland? Has the Scottish Parliament made any difference? Can we get our common good land back? For all those with an interest in urban and rural land in Scotland and the current Land Reform Bill- Andy provides a fascinating and illuminating discussion on one of the most important and pressing political questions in Scotland - Who owns Scotlands Land and how this matters in the 21st Century

Pro-independence PARADE, Dunfermline, Forward As One Second camera embedded in the march and carrying out interviews at the rally

PARADE / INTERVIEW camera --- Please Like & share! Independence Live, Livestream --- Second Annual Yes event in Dunfermline. This time we're doing it slightly differently. We want it to be a celebration of life, liberty and the hope for a better future. Rather than marching, we want it to be a mardi-gras style parade of dancing and singing, filling the ancient streets of Dunfermline with the sound of celebration. To be swiftly followed by a celebration in Pittencrief Park. So get dressed up, pull out the costumes and the face paint, make floats and prepare to sing your hearts out. Scotland's coming home to the last capital of Scotland where sovereignty lay with the people of Scotland. Parade to assemble next to near Dunfermline Train Station. Convoys and other ancillary events to be announced shortly. Jenny Hill - Songs of Separation Gavin talks to Jenny Hill about the Songs of Separation project

Gavin talks to Jenny about the Songs Of Separation Project About the project: Eigg hills & fields Songs of Separation brought together ten female folk musicians from Scotland and England, to create a recording which reflects on the issue of ‘separation’ in its many forms, through traditional song. Celebrating the similarities and differences in our musical, linguistic and cultural heritage, and set in the context of a post-referendum world, the work aims to evoke emotional responses and prompt new thinking about the issue of separation as it occurs in all our lives. The collected songs will aim to get to the heart of what we feel when we are faced with a separation, both good and bad. Providing a ‘thread through time’, joining us to previous generations who shared the same human experiences and responses to separation, and to the generations that will follow. Taking place on the beautiful Isle of Eigg in June 2015, the musicians spent an intensive week rehearsing and recording, including site recordings at the two sites central to the ‘Big Women of Eigg’ legend. The SoS musician team brought together the musical skills and ‘big thinking’ of Eliza Carthy and Karine Polwart, two of the UK’s most celebrated voices, Mary Macmaster and Kate Young, two boundary-breaking Scots, Hannah James, Hazel Askew and Rowan Rheingans, from the award winning English ensemble Lady Maisery, Jenn Butterworth and Jenny Hill, brilliant backline players who have worked in both English and Scottish trad scenes, and Hannah Read, a New York-based musician who spent much of her childhood on the Isle of Eigg. It was an unforgettable week of wonderful music making and compelling discussion! We have been sharing the progress of the work through short films, released during the week of the recording (see our youtube channel), and we are currently working on a ‘making of’ documentary, to go with the album, with a planned release in January 2016.

Kicking our consumer habit with Dr Iain Black Deconsumerism: Let's stop consumerism consuming us!

Me-first economics has created a cycle of work-to-consume. Saturation advertising and marketing continuously pushes us to spend money. But since me-first economics has also created long-term stagnation in wages, it has required us to borrow more and more to fuel consumption (personal debt in Britain is back to record levels). We are then trapped by our debt into maximising income in a low-pay economy........Let's try something different?

John Ashton on fracking: for whom and at what cost former UK climate envoy turned activist speaks about why it is vital for communities to resist Fracking

The prospect of fracking for shale gas (and other unconventional forms of extraction) at an industrial scale looms over much of the UK. It is pitting communities against aggressive corporate and financial interests that have bet on its success, as well as their political backers. It threatens to deepen already serious national divisions and is putting local authorities in an impossible position. Our democratic systems are cracking under the strain. In response a new movement is coming together, in a new kind of activism. Led by local communities, it is rallying people from many walks of life to take a stand against fracking and build a path to our low carbon future. It is forging new citizen networks across the UK, and linking hands with similar networks around the world. Independent speaker and former UK climate envoy John Ashton is part of this new activism and has recently been involved in the struggle to keep fracking out of Lancashire. Drawing on his experiences in politics and diplomacy he will explain why he sees the resistance to fracking as critical, both for the response to climate change and for political renewal in the UK, as a basis for discussion about Scotland’s voice in the world. *** John Ashton CBE trained and worked briefly as a physicist, then spent 30 years as a British diplomat. From 2006-12 he was the Special Representative for Climate Change for three successive UK foreign secretaries. He cofounded think tank E3G and is a member of the advisory board of Post Crash Economics. Our chair will be Sally Foster-Fulton, Convener of the Church and Society Council of The Church of Scotland and Ambassador for the ACT Climate Alliance.

Hope Over Fear are organizing this 2015 event to coincide with the anniversary of the referendum and to make a clear statement that our journey to full Independence for our nation continues. Our First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon has stated clearly that it will be the people of Scotland who will determine if and when there is an #indyref2. Lets fill Freedom Square and the surrounding streets of Glasgow on September 19th to make our voices heard. 2018 is an ideal year for #indyref2 as it is clear in terms of elections north and south of the border. (2016 Scottish parliament, 2017 Scottish council, 2019 English council and 2020 General election.) Join us on the Square with the message, #Indyref2 2018.

HOPE OVER FEAR: SEIZE THE DAY RALLY George Square, Glasgow. Lots of great speakers including Mark McGowan, The Artist Taxi Driver plus great music...

The Hope Over Fear campaign will not shirk its responsibilities. On May 7th 2015 we have a unique opportunity in Scotland to wipe out the blue, yellow and red Tories in one fell swoop. We can electorally punish those who lined up with the billionaires and millionaires to lie, deceive and bully our nation into submission. We are not too small, too poor or too scared to move forward into a new and better world and by uniting the pro-Scotland and anti-Establishment vote in May 2015 we can realise our dreams. Bring the family and enjoy another great day out while listening to the speakers from all political backgrounds and on the importance of using your vote wisely at the general election. There will also be many amazingly talented artists and musicians for you to enjoy on the day. In the words of Gerry Cinnamon's inspiring anthem of our movement, "Hope Over Fear, Carpe Diem". Let’s seize the day in 2015. NOTE: Mark McGowan, The Artist Taxi Driver will be one of the speakers :) FACEBOOK EVENT: https://www.facebook.com/events/401561463337441/

BBC Bias Peaceful Protest #2 Around 1:30 - 3:30pm BBC Bias Peaceful Protest #2 - The People's Voice!

BBC Bias Peaceful Protest #2 - The People's Voice! Sunday, June 29 at 1:30pm - 3:30pm BBC Scotland Studios, Pacific Quay G51 1 Glasgow, United Kingdom This is a protest against bias from the self-proclaimed “impartial” BBC. The most important issue we need to highlight is the repeated omission of relevant facts, information & answers that has kept Scotland in the dark about the real independence debate. The BBC’s coverage is ruining the run up to the biggest decision in our history. People are suitably sickened by the BBC & other mainstream media and their one sided conveyor belt of scare stories portrayed against our economic prospects, EU membership and the currency of an independent Scotland. Sometimes the bias is not in what they do cover but what they don't cover in their news & current affairs programmes. Specific examples of bias that concerns us are as follows: Make up of Question Time panels. Irish & Luxembourg EU ministers views misrepresented. UKIP promotion during EU elections. University of the West of Scotland report on bias on evening news programmes (BBC & STV) University of the West of Scotland report on bias on Radio Scotland Good Morning Scotland show The BBC's membership of the CBI which opposes independence and even tried to become an official member of the no campaign until a U turn after a mass cancellation of membership by Scottish companies. Different styles of questioning for Yes/No including more frequent interruptions from interviewers. The list goes on… Let's keep up the pressure on the old BBC and arrange their next outing as a massive anti-bias operation! Bring your saltires, banners, balloons, friends, family and loud voices. Make it a day to remember! Everyone is welcome from both sides of the debate. Groups that wish to protest about other instances of BBC bias unrelated to the independence debate are also more than welcome to attend.
