Anti-Repression Forum, Edinburgh in Protest

This event examines state repression and how we might respond. It begins with a screening of the short documentary (37mins) about the Catalan referendum on 1 October 2017. You can watch this at https://youtu.be/K6i69o2ANJg - switch on YouTube's closed caption option to get English subtitles. Speaking after the screening we have Aina Vidal Ros (Catalonia), Elena Ortega Hermosa (Spain) and a speaker from the Muslim Women Association Edinburgh. Spanish rapper VALTONYC was to appear also both at this discussion event and the evening's benefit gig, but he was sentenced to three and a half years in prison on Thursday under Spain's repressive "gag law" for writing songs about the Spanish royal family and politicians. Bare Facts... Cottiers Theatre, Glasgow: Lesley Riddoch, Lady Alba, Teenage Fanclub’s Francis Macdonald, Gaelic singer Kathleen MacInnes, comedian David Bratchpiece and Scottish singer/songwriter Findlay Napier

GRASSROOTS POLITICS DETERMING SCOTLAND’S FUTURE The Bare Facts is hosting an evening of music, comedy and politics one week before the UK General Election with guest speaker Lesley Riddoch giving her insights on Scotland’s future post-election. Lesley McLean, one of The Bare Facts founding members, said: “We are so excited about our forthcoming event since we started from very humble beginnings, a group of local women meeting in someone’s home. We are a mixed group of voters but we felt the need to get the Bare Facts out there about the key issues that concern people, the economy, NHS, pensions… without the political spin. The biggest legacy of the Scottish referendum is not a divided nation but a nation that is politically engaged, interested and active – grassroots politics is having its day.” Lesley Riddoch, broadcaster and journalist, will lift the lid on politics on Thurs 30th April at Cottiers Theatre and give a frank talk on Scotland’s future touching on the issues of local control and empowerment, land ownership and reform, top down democracy and ending elitism. No spin just the BARE FACTS! Lesley Riddoch contends “Ordinary Scots have demonstrated their capacity to run Scotland time after time – yet continue to tolerate a remarkably elitist, top-down, centralised, “stand there till we fix you” society that will not change on its own whatever the outcome on the 7th May -- but there is a palpable sea change in political awareness emerging. Roaming around Scotland to do talks, I find audiences aghast that they know so little about Scotland, its history, the pioneering achievements of its ain folk and the way our norms sit within a European context. But also hungry for more easy to understand information to raise their knowledge without signing up for a block of evening classes. Can that be done in some imaginative way? Maybe Bare Facts and the other grassroots movements which have emerged after the Scottish referendum can help to address this.” Performances on the night include Lady Alba, Teenage Fanclub’s Francis Macdonald, Gaelic singer Kathleen MacInnes, comedian David Bratchpiece and Scottish singer/songwriter Findlay Napier. The event will be hosted by Viv Gee; comedian, writer and winner of the Scottish Comedy Award for Outstanding Contribution to Comedy in 2014.

BP or not BP? street theatre protest against BP sponsorship of the Edinburgh International Festival

Yes, the oil giant is a top-level 'festival partner' of the Edinburgh International Festival. So theatrical protest group BP or not BP? is joining with performers and actorvists in Edinburgh to call for an end to oil sponsorship of the EIF. Now is the summer of our discontent! Hope Over Fear are organizing this 2015 event to coincide with the anniversary of the referendum and to make a clear statement that our journey to full Independence for our nation continues. Our First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon has stated clearly that it will be the people of Scotland who will determine if and when there is an #indyref2. Lets fill Freedom Square and the surrounding streets of Glasgow on September 19th to make our voices heard. 2018 is an ideal year for #indyref2 as it is clear in terms of elections north and south of the border. (2016 Scottish parliament, 2017 Scottish council, 2019 English council and 2020 General election.) Join us on the Square with the message, #Indyref2 2018.

HOPE OVER FEAR: SEIZE THE DAY RALLY George Square, Glasgow. Lots of great speakers including Mark McGowan, The Artist Taxi Driver plus great music...

The Hope Over Fear campaign will not shirk its responsibilities. On May 7th 2015 we have a unique opportunity in Scotland to wipe out the blue, yellow and red Tories in one fell swoop. We can electorally punish those who lined up with the billionaires and millionaires to lie, deceive and bully our nation into submission. We are not too small, too poor or too scared to move forward into a new and better world and by uniting the pro-Scotland and anti-Establishment vote in May 2015 we can realise our dreams. Bring the family and enjoy another great day out while listening to the speakers from all political backgrounds and on the importance of using your vote wisely at the general election. There will also be many amazingly talented artists and musicians for you to enjoy on the day. In the words of Gerry Cinnamon's inspiring anthem of our movement, "Hope Over Fear, Carpe Diem". Let’s seize the day in 2015. NOTE: Mark McGowan, The Artist Taxi Driver will be one of the speakers :) FACEBOOK EVENT: https://www.facebook.com/events/401561463337441/

BBC Bias Peaceful Protest #2 Around 1:30 - 3:30pm BBC Bias Peaceful Protest #2 - The People's Voice!

BBC Bias Peaceful Protest #2 - The People's Voice! Sunday, June 29 at 1:30pm - 3:30pm BBC Scotland Studios, Pacific Quay G51 1 Glasgow, United Kingdom This is a protest against bias from the self-proclaimed “impartial” BBC. The most important issue we need to highlight is the repeated omission of relevant facts, information & answers that has kept Scotland in the dark about the real independence debate. The BBC’s coverage is ruining the run up to the biggest decision in our history. People are suitably sickened by the BBC & other mainstream media and their one sided conveyor belt of scare stories portrayed against our economic prospects, EU membership and the currency of an independent Scotland. Sometimes the bias is not in what they do cover but what they don't cover in their news & current affairs programmes. Specific examples of bias that concerns us are as follows: Make up of Question Time panels. Irish & Luxembourg EU ministers views misrepresented. UKIP promotion during EU elections. University of the West of Scotland report on bias on evening news programmes (BBC & STV) University of the West of Scotland report on bias on Radio Scotland Good Morning Scotland show The BBC's membership of the CBI which opposes independence and even tried to become an official member of the no campaign until a U turn after a mass cancellation of membership by Scottish companies. Different styles of questioning for Yes/No including more frequent interruptions from interviewers. The list goes on… Let's keep up the pressure on the old BBC and arrange their next outing as a massive anti-bias operation! Bring your saltires, banners, balloons, friends, family and loud voices. Make it a day to remember! Everyone is welcome from both sides of the debate. Groups that wish to protest about other instances of BBC bias unrelated to the independence debate are also more than welcome to attend.
